Fire can kill trees, leaving dead trees standing. Fire can also cause the (whole) dead trees to collapse in cave-ins that does not result in any logs (but when a dragon set fire to my surface, the collapsing trees left annoying unpathable holes in the surface (the same kind I think you get when building a fortification with nothing above [haven't done that myself])).
It's been my assumption that the collapses are caused by the trees attempting to regrow.

There's a bug that was fixed recently, but I'm not sure if it's the same issue.
Given that airborne channeled away saplings cause cave-ins when they try to mature into trees (again and again), it sounds reasonable that burned tree cave-ins may be caused by them trying to grow, in which case the trees are either dead, but don't know it and collapse when they find out, or weren't entirely dead, but a supporting part (such as the trunk) was, causing a collapse->cave-in-> elimination of the tree.
None of those bugs seem like they should address this issue, but you never know...

I once embarked near an elven civilization. They did send some minor armies just a few years after embark. It had nothing to do with the trees: it seems I choose to embark near one of their holy locations, a grave of someone. After a few humiliating defeats they decided to leave me alone.

Depending on which version of the game your playing, You might want to check the news screen and see if anything triggered a war/if the elves are at peace or war with you.

If they haven't set an exact quota, im pretty sure felling trees doesn't anger them. Have you previously had trading encounters that endend with them either being offended or dead?
