Fabletop: quick to learn and free tabletop
« on: December 21, 2018, 08:41:42 am »

I've been running a world/game as GM for a year now on the website called fabletop.
Like a cut down version of DnD, it is incredibly easy to learn the rules on there and it's easy to make house rules to add a bit of complexity and uniqueness to your games.
It has a "how to play" button that tells you some rules but there are some rules listed such as "no player character death" and some others that I ignore or have changed for my table.

It's great fun but there are almost no people playing on my time zones as I'm from Australia.
Don't get me wrong, I have a group of players that often join my games but most of them can only stay half the session as they are playing well into the AM on their side of the world.

Would anyone be interested in giving it a try and joining or spectating some of my games?

It's very close to Christmas so I'm going to be online and just do some world building on 23/12 1PM Brisbane time which is 22/12 7PM PST, but am willing to help create characters and maybe do a small session.
The next session after that will be on 28/12 1PM Brisbane time which is 27/12 7PM PST.

PM me or reply here if you're interested in trying it out.

I've been having fun with this. Been looking for an online tabletop RPG site for a while.

Wow, it has already lost points with me by not allowing uppercase letters in one's username. Disgusting.
...No offense. :P

I'm still going to give it a go, though. Might even come along to the session on the 27th - it's nice having a game advertised in a familiar timezone!

Give me a yell if you keep playing into the new year (my work gets really busy at this time of year. I'm just down the Gold Coast, work some days, some nights, but I'll check it out for a laugh.

It's not so much a cut down version of D&D as it is a weirdly simplified version of FATE. Maptools is already free and lets me play with any rules I want, so what's the benefit here?

EDIT: Also, having read the rules more, I really don't care what these people think is badwrongfun. They really want me to care. This is not good game design.

Not if they want a large playerbase, no. It might be if they want to create a very specific environment for a curated community. How do they monetize, anyway?

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

Will do, I host at least once a week. I'll pm you some time early January for some of my sessions so you can join.

In fabletop it is much easier and faster to make maps on the fly (in the middle of a session), making it great for an open world style game like I am running.

With the creator of the site writing how he wants people to play, yeah that's not great but you can just ignore it, I ignore it and do thing differently than he says to do it in his how to play section.

The site is currently free but will be monetized at some stage in the far future.
