Dragon in a forest
« on: January 17, 2018, 08:55:19 pm »

I like how my fortress has lots of trees raw lumber surrounding it. Then a dragon came. How would I go about defeating/capturing the dragon without losing too many of my aboveground vertical log stockpiles?
By the way, this is 44.02 where the megabeasts don't target to the fortress, but just hover around the edge.

What I've been doing, is building rows of cage traps tile by tile closer to the Invader.

The first row is a safe distance (maybe 20 tiles away), then 19, then 18, etc. By the time I reach whatever it's aggro-range is, hopefully (I only did this twice :P but they were both successful) he'll chase the Dwarf as he's building close to him. Assuming the Dwarf does a 180 degree turn to bolt it, he traverses all the traps that the Dragon will Surely fall prey to!

I've also found doing it this way, that the moment I build a Wall within close proximity, that's the "I'm gonna get you!" trigger. They don't like walls...

Edit: Oh yeah, & if close enough - I did another time make a massive pasture that just reached this Minotaur, then put a raven in it. The raven flew like Crazy to get away, unfortunately went the wrong way at the last second... but it was enough for the Minotaur to path-find back over the traps.

Upgrade to 0.44.05 and let the dragon path to your normal entrance (I assume you've got traps there).

5 cage traps, three of which are unloaded.
I don't get many sieges.

Eh I'll try, and if worst comes to worst I'll trap him in the entrance hall with two platinum statues.

And I don't have enough cages for the first trick. Also, won't the dragon melt all the cage traps with its breath?

Dragons only use breath attacks to attack targets, and I don't think statues count: I'd expect the normal standing and destroying method to be used. Melting/setting fire to things are side effects of attacking targets (such as your dorfs), so provided they're out of range the dragon won't have any reason to use the breath attack.

Dragon is safely caged and in an out-of-the-way stockpile. I'll figure out how training works from here.

Thanks for the 44.05 tip.

Legends mode says there's 2 male dragons and 2 female dragons in the world.
This will be entertaining.

Fire doesn't kill trees FYI - as in they'll be charred and burnt but you can still get logs out of them. The only exception is if it causes a cave-in on the tree.
