Cavern creature question, or perhaps not
« on: January 09, 2018, 06:48:43 am »

If you have not breached any caverns yet, will cave creatures still spawn and path about the caves?
I just had half a dwarfmonth of unexpected FPS drop and graphical lag. (From a stable 72 max down to 43, and GFPS from 36 down to 23).
It started somewhere after the dwarf caravan arrived, and it suddenly resolved itself (back to 72 max stable now), with the caravan still on the map.

The only thing I can think of is that something (probably a creature I forgot to remove the FLIER tag from) spawned in the caves.
The last time I had such FPS drop was when a Giant Mantis was flying around the surface map. Not sure if that also dropped my GFPS though. I almost never see this kind of lag. Normal FPS drop is still smooth, this GFPS drop really made it look like it stuttered (because it dropped below our brain's GFPS of about 24).

No idea what else could cause such weird temporary lag. I don't have waterfalls. Only have 1 underground layer (worldgen setting), and embarked 2x2, even smaller than my other fort.

Cavern critters are there whether you can see them or not (the DFHack "reveal" command should show them, but be careful with that command, as it can burn you if you're not careful (which includes finding out how it should be used)).
There's a stutter bug in 0.44.03 that's fixed in the unreleased 0.44.04.

Looks like it's not related to carvern creatures. It happened again with the next dwarven caravan.

I suspect it has to do with ordering diamonds. I never did that, but decided to encrust stuff with bought diamonds this fort. To my surprise, no diamonds on the trade screen, and the caravan arrival dropped FPS from 72 to 23 this time, and GFPS to 20.

After some looking, I found a caravan horse that is in a prone position 1 tile next to the trade depot. It is loaded with all the diamonds I ordered, but which aren't available in the depot. Apparently there's some glitch where not the entire caravan unloads at the depot. I could trade just fine though, it's just that the goods of that one pack animal aren't unloaded. You'd expect a 'apologies, merchants are still unloading their goods' message, but it would just let me trade.

Duh silly me I was looking with t not v. So it's not the horse that's loaded with the diamonds. It's the trade depot. So the diamonds are unloaded allright, but not showing up for trade. Must be what's causing the weird lags.
Crap wrong, those are large diamonds, and are showing up just fine. Looks like they didn't bring any small cut diamonds at all then despite me ordering at max price. The lag remains a mystery

So the slowdown extended to the elven and human caravans now. I tried destroying the trade depot and slightly moving it, but it didn't help, the next human caravan again dramatically dropped my FPS and GFPS.
The caravan arrives and starts unpacking just fine, but I think the lag starts the moment they are done unpacking.
I hope this is one of the stutter bugs that Toady mentioned he is working on.
It could be worse, 25-ish FPS for a dwarfmonth is manageable, but it is annoying, because I should have no lag at all with 20 pop on a 2x2 embark.
