0.44.03 - Questions about fishing, melting and other stuff
« on: January 01, 2018, 07:11:08 am »

Hello boys and girls,

I wanted to ask how satisfying the newest version of DF is. I come from the 0.34.11 version and I just had the feeling to give DF another try after all the time.

I have some normal questions and some questions related to the newest version.

Normal questions:
N1: Is it possible to decorate furniture after putting it in place in a room and deconstructing it, so that it is back in the stockpile? I remember having gold furniture without decorations and after reading that you can only decorate it after creation it broke "my dwarves' hearts".

N2: Can you smelt decorated items, for example: a golden chair decorated with bones?

N3: Can you still start with a king or queen on embark when your civ is extinct?
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Extinction
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Monarch "However, one of your fortress residents may become monarch if the previous monarch was killed or the position was vacant."

N4: How to get enough shells for artifacts when you have no turtles on your map and "Shells currently cannot be acquired via trading -- turtles, crustaceans and shellfish purchased from traders have already been processed and had their shells removed."?

New version question:
V1: Can you catch fish in caverns now and is the fish source inexhaustible as long as you let the fish time to reproduce in some way?
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=5703 Because this http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=2780 seems to be thing on "non-underground" pounds.

V2: Can you still end up with a ocean location having no fish or going dry on fish resources?
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Ocean "However, sometimes when you embark on a coast, you might receive announcements like "There is nothing to catch in <some area>" If this happens, you won't be able to fish in the ocean in this embark, which may prompt you to abandon the fort and start again elsewhere. "

I remember having a fortress next to an ocean and after some years I got a message that there is no more fish to catch which also hurts. :/

I think this was it all for now, it would be nice when someone can answer my questions because I really want to get into DF again. :)

N1: As decoration takes place in workshops, you ought to be able to decorate only "available" furniture. I've never bothered with decoration, though.
N2: I believe so, I haven't examined my goblinite much, but I would guess some melted stuff was decorated.
N3: If your civ is *dead* you won't get a monarch. However, due to a bug, most civs that ought to be dead refuse to die and stay in the "struggling" state, which is where one of your dorfs suddenly become a new monarch. In addition to this, you can only embark as a dead civ if ALL dwarven civs are dead (I've made a pair of DFHack scripts to push civs that should be dead over the brink during worldgen, and add dead playable civs (i.e. dwarven ones) to the list of civs available for embark respectively).
Also note that you can occasionally get saddled with a new monarch even if your civ is/was healthy at embark, if the old monarch croaks, in particular if that was the result of the sacking/conquest of the mountainhome leaving your site the civs most glorious remaining site. I've never heard of a monarch at embark, so I assume that's no longer the case.
N4: There are a few shell bearing creatures you can get, like giant snails, FBs/Titans, etc. You can also get them from elven caravans in the form of live (caged) shell bearing creatures, and with luck you can even get a breeding pair. Fortunately, shell moods are fairly rare, but they do happen, so giant snails are attacked when they appear unless turtles are available, in which case I assume I can start fishing if a shell mood strikes.
V1: I believe all cavern fish are of the vermin variety that is "innumerable", but I don't fish except for shells (I'm struggling with overproduction, not to keep my dorfs fed...).
V2: I haven't heard of it, but can't rule it out.

Strike the earth, and remember that when the first fortress fails, that's only to give you additional knowledge for the next one.
(And I assume you know about multi level trees, as you didn't ask about those).

"... If the position no longer exists (i.e. the civilization is truly extinct) then no monarch will be appointed until the civilization is "resurrected" (by unretiring a fortress, for example)."

N2: Decorated items can be melted just like any other item. Metal decorations do not produce anything when you melt them.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Just wanted to say thanks to PatrikLundell, Loci and anewaname for the answers.

Right now I have the hope to start a fortress next to the ocean... with a dead civ, so that I get a Monarch at the start and start a living only on fish and wine. ;)
