Some little suggestions...
« on: December 13, 2017, 10:03:26 am »

It's me again, and the first thing I would like to thank the community. Really, thank you for such a welcome! I was expecting many criticism under my suggestions, such as "Anyone can offer, you would try to do something!" or "The physics in the game at the highest level, you would not have done better, so don't nag!". The community of this game is adequate! Thank you!
And now to business. Here I leave a lot of detail, perhaps imperceptible, but they can make Dwarf Fortress more interesting. Most of them do not require much effort from the developers, to add each idea will take no more than a week. Go!
1)Holidays! Dwarves have their own calendar, but it serves no purpose... it would be possible to add the holidays and it will solve several issues. First, it will be use for the calendar. Secondly, dwarves will have more fun. Right now the maximum, what is the most fun dwarf party in the dining room or the zoo. But there is one small catch. Time goes too fast. If you add holidays, they will be over before it started. If time were slower, it would have been better. But in any case, it is possible to arrange festivals, running throughout the week, or something like that. Here's what I came up with:
-Birthdays! The game keeps track of the age of the dwarves, so why not celebrate their birthdays? In the birthday of the dwarf he will be a cheerful mood, and his friends and relatives will congratulate him that will make him even happier. If someone will do not - he'll be upset. Maybe they could bring the gifts (if the economy will return...). More noble dwarves deserve more expensive gifts. Maybe the birthday of the dwarf will be a day off for him?
-Professional holidays. These days dwarves of a certain profession will rise to the mood, and all of them will congratulate. For example, the day of the masson or blacksmith.
-Scientific congresses. These days, scientists are certain areas gather in one of the fortress for a few days and share their wisdom. For example, the day of the historian.
-The year of science! Every tenth year to declare the year of science (if these pseudo-mathematicians know how to count to ten...)! This year all scholars of civilization gather in one fortress and live there for a year, and then diverge back. If the year of science is in another fortress, this means that your scientists just piled on year from you. But if the year of science will be held in your fortress, you should be prepared. You need a lot of living rooms, more tables, food and drink, because you for the whole year will come scientists your entire civilization (I hope their will be at least hundred, otherwise, the year science will be boring...).
-Religious holidays celebrated only by those who worship specific deities. On this day, they can gather in the temple (or anywhere else...) and pray together. Maybe the gods will hear them this time?
-New year! Maybe one of the dwarves with a big white beard dressed in Santa Claus? Yes, it is silly... but fun.
-Parades. Maybe the Monarch will come to your fortress to look at marching swordsmens and crossbowmens?
2)Clearing snow. Seriously, do dwarves can't clean the snow near the entrance to the fortress? This could be done using order or zone.
3)A more convenient interface. As I said in a previous topic, I have to navigate across multiple screens to understand the situation. Here are my suggestions:
-On the screen of squads should be displayed the fighting skills of the dwarves (or at least should be a button quickly move to them). The troops especially uncomfortable. When I assign them, I look at the destination screen, screen for skills, another screen for equipment, a screen schedule and screen for the barracks. And it's not working. The dwarves do not take the equipment for any reason, they do not train, they train without rest and complain of fatigue and hunger, then continue to train after the abolition of train, or happen another shit...
-On the destination screen fighters in the squad I must do something to distinguish those dwarves, who are already in another squad. Maybe to display their names in a different color? Or write [ASSIGNED TO %SQUADNAME%]?
-The buildings should be a button increase the priority of construction. When I want to build a new mason workshop all my masons do anything, except for the construction workshop. Where is the button "Build now!"?.
-The containers are completely unknown. Add a more comfortable setting up their content. How to get the dwarves to put in the boxes, only certain objects? If I want in one box was a emeralds in the other - rubies and one with sapphires, should I do 3 stock and each set up? Why not tune the boxes?
-Me irritates, that route points are numbered ascending, but the numbers are not reset. That is, if I put the point, it will be called "Point 1". If I take it off and put in another place another one, it will be called "Point 2". Why? With stocks it works. I put the stock is "Stock 1", then remove, put again and again is "Stock 1".
-Why do some of the work that cannot be performed now, highlighted in red, and some are not. I give orders in the workshop and they write that they have not enough components. Why not all the impossible orders red?
4)Why dwarves almost never wash? Maybe assign them a new area like a pool or something, so they washed there if they get dirty?
5)Change the energy output from a water wheel, then it been impossible to create a perpetual motion machine.
6)Let the ice remembers how much water it was freezing, when defrosting, it turned into a proper amount of water, not 7/7.
7)Nobles requests separate dining room, maybe they will want to eat more exotic dishes?
8)Let drawbridges create a wall, the height of which when it vertical is proportional to the length of the bridge when it horisontal.
9)Add a new punishment for criminals like exile, forced labor, or the cutting of his beard.
10)Crutches are great, but why not make a wheelchair? Or dwarves prefer to ride in wheelbarrows and minecarts? Maybe dwarf in a wheelchair cannot go on the stairs, and you have to equip the fortress with ramps?
11)Why do dwarves no fears? Maybe dwarf with a fear of heights will get bad thoughts if it is on high Z-level or dwarf with claustrophobia will get bad thoughts in small spaces?
12)Make childrens normal. Why do they harvest? Why drag the goods to the caravan? Let the kids play with toys. Why I do it, if the childrens with great interest to portray something. Maybe playing with toys, they will learn? A child playing with a mini-forge will become blacksmith and if he is fond of puzzles - become a scientist?
13)Allow players to give orders to ignore wet or warm stone. It annoys me when I'm digging near the water, and every time I have to reassign the excavations. I KNOW THAT THIS STONE IS WET, JUST DIG IT!
14)Ducks do not like to swim? This is unlike the behavior of ducks...
15)Why the bookkeeper is sitting on the stool while work? Shouldn't he be running around the stocks and count inventory?
It's a few suggestions written in one day and they require the same time. Some of them I have already described, but here I decided to collect a large part of what the developers can do quickly and effortlessly.

I have idea to add for your number 7. Can we make so ordinary dwarves will eat simple meals and above to be happy. Ordinary nobles like the broker and captain of the guard will only eat fine meals and above, they will not eat simple meals. True nobles like barons and kings will only eat lavish meals. If there are no lavish meals, they will starve :D

A good bit of that is abstractions or perhaps gone unnoticed (Bookkeeper, bathing,) while others can be blamed on simple AI behaviors - Ducks are fliers first in the game's eyes unless domesticated. I'll leave others to touch the the body of that.

I will say I like as perhaps a zone option to "keep this zone clear of contaminants," and a stockpile setting to "bin like items" by type (swords with swords only in this bin, regardless of material,) material (copper crafts with copper crafts in a given bin only, regardless of type of craft,) or both (iron helmets in this bin only.) It'd probably lead to much higher bin usage than what is already there, but one quick look in a bin and you know if you're sending your poverty copper junk up to a human caravan or those valuable platinum ones you've been saving for the dwarf caravan.

I also like the idea of finicky nobles, but rather than refusing to eat, simply have them build up more and more stress the longer they have to keep eating "substandard" meals for thier station. I could see a king or duke being annoyed by "mere" fine meals, agitated by simple ones, and about ready to kill someone if forced to keep eating raw food for long enough.

I also like the idea of additional punishment types, though some do have certain punishments already (Vandalism earns you a beating or long jail stint, murder gets you the hammer, for example.) Adding a punishment that humiliates the criminal - greatly stressing them out for a long time afterwards - Would be nice.

Dwarves are humiliated by having thier beards shorn - Either theirs (if male,) or the beard of a random male relative if female (stressing both out.) or perhaps by having thier property seized (dwarves being greedy, this would probably be seen as very humiliating)
Humans get punished by being forced to go without clothes for a period or by being disfigured depending on the crime's severity.
Elves are punished by being exiled to a human or dwarven kingdom for a period of time.
Goblins.... Well, they sort thier shit out personally. Shave you bald, confiscate your stuff, maiming...

I'm all for holidays, but it should be randomly generated with the world so we can get some interesting things (like blood day, a day of drinking and fighting)
I would love to have festivals in fortress mode, maybe have there be stalls that the local dwarves or visitors can set up (when the economy comes back they can set prices for renting stalls and prices for food and games). there should be competitions in festivals (like the axe throwing competition you see in world gen, a fight pit, DRINKING COMPETITION, so on and so forth)

What about making it so that they can celebrate critical events in a civilization's history and when the civ falls, that holidays disappear?
