I always like to see how other people lay out their fortresses. To kick things off, here's the top level of my fort's residential district; each of the four quarters may be accessed via the tavern, immediately above. You can easily build more layers above or below, and there's plenty of room to make installing plumbing painless, if you're into that. It's probably not super efficient, but things get done quickly enough in my fort that it's never been a problem.

1. Dormitories
2. Bedrooms for visitors
3. Hospital (soap stockpile above; nothing below at the moment)
4. Huge rooms for needy nobles (personal stairs lead to their other holdings)
5. Large rooms for useful officials and worthy dwarves
6. Normal bedrooms
