"All Versions" have other options, as 32 bits DF, or running in some old system.

There is no update, don't move folder between games.
You can move the "save" folder, but old fortress don't have the new Raw, and some content may not work.
Create a new World, and a New Fortress (or Adventurer), and enjoy the new update.

The admins of Lazy New Pack don't have tools for this release, Play Vanilla DF_44_01 or play Lazy New Pack 43.05 r10.

If you're using a normal browser, the link to the new version ought to be the top link on the forum page this is pasted in (News: November....).

"Safely" is not a word that should be associated with the first release of an arc...

You CAN copy the save games in the save folder (region1, etc.) to a new install (either vanilla, i.e. just download and unpack the zip in any directory the OS won't play games with [such as denying write access], or the still smoking hot LNP).
As Luriant said, you won't have access to all the new functionality with a migrated save, so the best options are to either keep playing the old version, or generate a new world with the new one (vanilla or LNP).
