Is it possible to embark on a Dark Fortress?
« on: November 26, 2017, 04:48:18 am »

I've read the wiki, but it doesn't say anywhere about embarking on one. Is it only possible to find one in Adventure Mode?

Hello Rekortee.

Embark selection does not allow you to create your own site (fortress) on top of an existing site (city/hamlet/forest retreat/dark fortress).

I am pretty sure it's done for a good reason. I.e. a person from your fort could also be marked from Dark Fortress at the same time, and it could mess up something in legends (like, where do they actually live).
I am not exactly sure which kind of issues can happen if you did embark like that.

It is possible to overcome this limitation (as well as minimum size of embark rectangle) using external memory hacking tools like DFHack, but not in vanilla. You can learn more about DFHack in the modding forum.
I do remember weirdness like local goblins being friendly but invaders being hostile, even though they are from the same goblin civ... So the game does not really expect this to happen :).

Okay, thanks! But, im guessing it is still possible to embark next to the borders of one, right?

True, but the only two things that it will give you will be:
1) You will be able to raid them almost immediately.
2) In adventure mode you will not have to walk a long way between them.

DFHack has an "embark anywhere" option that can be enabled from the pre embark screen, and I believe it allows you to embark on top of a dark fortress (I know it's possible to embark on e.g. a necro tower with it). Obviously, we're talking 0.43.05 here, as it will take some time for DFHack to catch up with 0.44.X.
Embarking on top of a hostile settlement is probably going to lead to interesting issues. It will also cause lag if the fortress is large (10000 goblins can slow things down a bit...).

I've used EmbarkAnywhere to do that kind of thing before.
Consequences were... interesting.
You can lock everyone's doors.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.
