Toady's mentioned a foray into 3D a number of times in talks, and I think Slaves to Armok might be it. The only info I have seen are from (videos of) talks from various conferences posted through the DF forum.

About the tutorial? You're absolutely right that a simple tutorial would get the game more long-term players. I used the quickstart guide on the Wiki with good results and it kept me playing, but it would be super nice to have an in-game walkthrough that guided the player through all the steps. It would take a lot of work but I absolutely agree it would have a positive effect. But unless it really guided the user through at least mid-game when seiges begin, players are eventually going to hit roadblocks that make them feel ill-equipped to a certain extent - but anything would be a vast improvement over nothing at all. Hopefully by that point they'd be hooked! It's a good idea.

I dont really care about user bases for single player games, If its a good game that all that matter.

Dwarf fortress is one of the only games I can get just lost in, in a good way that is. I can start a new fort and play all night and not feel bored at any point.

Its one of the only games I feel an inch to play if I haven't played in a while, the overcoming of various *FUN* problems is a great hook for me.

I dont mind the interface or the look of the game, i dislike any texture pack and is so used to the look of the game I would not trade it for anything.

Does it need more newbie friendly tutorials? Does it need more clear goals for a new player? It would not affect me and would make it more attractive so I have no problem with it.

But DF is a niche game, a free niche game at that, should cater to that specific niche, not try to become something its not.

I have seen games do exactly that and lose their ''souls'' in the process.

Wow I guess I'm a few pages late in on this, but for answering the OP. As long as the weird game-play stays the same, I don't think the game would lose its appeal if the interface or graphics changed. But oddly enough I always have trouble getting used to custom tilesets whenever I try to use the graphics other people have made for the game. I always find it easier to play with the original ascii.

Edit: If the game had tutorials would it lose its appeal... I dunno, hard to say. Depends on if they are subtle and good tutorials or in your face and bad tutorials. I think this is the kind of game where tutorials would be hard to implement without them being intrusive and bad. There would probably need to be a separate "Tutorial mode" rather than having tutorials in the game itself.

I probably WOULD be a bit disenchanted if tutorials were added to the game (at least ones covering anything more than the most basic aspects of gameplay, like an in-game version of the quickstart wiki page). Others may have a different view of course, but part of what I find so much fun about DF are the surprises that come with what you have to figure out on your own.

I'd support an in-depth tutorial mode, but not a forced in-game tutorial.

And weird gameplay . . . a lot of that is in bugs that will probably be ironed out unless we get vocal about it. There's always going to be emergent stuff that manages to happen on its own without being a bug, but a lot of the weird, gamy stuff we've loved over the years was placeholder material until the code could be reworked. It'll be interesting to see what the game becomes when we get magic, military, and economy updates, but we'll probably see a lot of the old weirdness phased out and replaced by new issues arising.

3D has nothing to do with the actual complexity of the game. It's two separate subjects: game logic and rendering. Your GPU will handle the graphics very well while your CPU computes what happens in the game.
