My guards spend half their time in bed recovering from injuries. I just let them spar with whatever weapons and armor are available. If they become skilled warriors, great. If they cripple themselves, whatever.

Screen them by looking at their personalities. Look for ones who are resistant to stress and don't get angry.

Does that make all that much difference?  If so this game has just cause another small part of my brain to explode in joyous abandon. How much of a modifier do those personality traits have on moods?

It's hard to tell, but personalities definately make some difference to what dwarves enjoy doing (nice dwarves will get a happy thought from bringing someone food, mean dwarves will be irritated by having to do it). I'm pretty sure "quick to anger" affects how likely they are to throw tantrums.

Another idea: set dwarves to work as butchers for a while, and slay a few dozen kittens until they get the "doesn't really care about anything anymore" thought, then put them into the guard. I think that makes dwarves more resilient to unhappiness, and less likely (maybe impossible?) to tantrum.

This whole stuff is like the Mobile Infantry training in Starship Troopers. Or any horrendously competent military, fictional or real, for that matter. Screen the tough ones, make them psychologically resistant, train them up (you missed assigning them as Pump Operators for strength), give'em top notch equipment and you have a force of mean badasses. A fortress guard like this might actually prevent the spiral into tantrums and craze after a tragedy.

Iv'e got the queen without a guard, hardly any roads, and without the other noble (who came in directly afterwards.

Did haveabout 300 adamantium though.

Ahhh. So then the text in the init.txt file must be outdated. It states that you need only a population of 50 to get the king. Or maybe that refers to the adamantium king.
Thanks.

Regardless of how useful they actually are, a part of the article should explain, without so much bias, why they are useless. Currently the article is quite useless if you are looking for information and are not familiar with royal guards already.

If you have adamantine, the King/Queen will come whether you like it or not.

And it's spelled "adamantine," not "adamantium" (Marvel Comics) nor "adamantite" (World of Warcraft).
