I have been wanting to GM a game like this for some time and would like to see if anyone would be interested in this before I start. The basic premise is that the players are the captain and crew of a spaceship in lawless space and will have to figure out how to fend off the pirates and make money - even if this means they become pirates themselves.

As for the game system, this would most likely use GURPS. I would probably let players tell me what they want to do and handle all the rules behind the scenes for the benefit of the unfamiliar.

What's a GURP? Also, do you create your own character?

A beginner, I see. No worries. GURPS is the Generic Universal Role-Playing System, published by Steve Jackson Games. I will be using the Fourth Edition. You can find a 32-page intro as a free PDF here. Character generation in GURPS is a bit of a tricky affair, especially for someone not well versed in the system, so I will probably give you a selection of pre-generated characters to choose from.
