suicidal dwarves
« on: October 02, 2017, 03:57:00 pm »

My dwarves are running into a cavern that I breached, in order to clean some blood on the floor.. so far they have been lucky to avoid having themselves killed, but how to I prevent them from doing it again?
Are burrows the only option?

You could wall it off...

Your main options are:

1) Turning off cleaning and forbidding death items, that will keep them from going into pick up bones and clean up blood. Also turning off auto-web collection to prevent weavers chasing spider silk.
2) Walling off cavern access so you never need to bother dealing with it.
3) Claim the cavern layer and wall off/trap the edges so most dangers get held away, caged or killed.
4) And of course burrows.

Burrows don't work. Unless you forbid all the old bones in the cavern your haulers are going to stop working to spam that the can't haul that old pile of bones, drop that job, look for a new one, find a pile of bones, complain they can't do that, drop the job...

Burrows are useful to pull the dorfs back from the cavern and keep them from going there as a temporary measure while you close it off, but it's not a viable longer term solution (it's the same thing with the surface during a siege, although you can change to corpse hauling global setting).

Okay, thanks.

Well I captured that jabberer that I wanted to have and closed the drawbridge. I had built a line of defenses and was hoping that turning off web gathering would prevent the civilians from suicide missions, but alas. I guess I have no option but walling off, as usual. And temporarily disable Cleaning jobs if I want to make another dive in.

Still, I think this feature could be improved. Bones can at least be forbidden, but blood stains can't.

In the long run I prefer to tame the caverns, go in and build walls to block off all the passages except the ones I want monsters to pass through and then trap them with enough traps to dice a crundle swarm. The caverns become a glorified meat blender.

Another setting you can change is the 'o'rders 'F'orbid 'o'ther_dead.

New bodies and scattered teeth, etc, will be forbidden before they hit the ground. Hunters still return their kills to the butcher's shop if they are not interrupted while hauling, but if the hunted animal dies while the hunter is getting more ammo, I suspect the body is flagged forbidden.

I've started setting this option when I first embark, since it stops unplanned cavern trash cleanup. I suspect it doesn't stop the Cleaning jobs though.

You can also install a door in your entrance to the caverns, and lock it when you don't want dwarves down there. My dwarves cancel-spam about inaccessible objects when restricted to the civilian alert burrow, but when I lock the outside doors and turn off the alert, they forget the outside world even exists.

that is generally a bad idea unless there are traps behind the door. some creatures can break the door down/pick the lock on the door (open it even though its forbidden, then again these creatures usually have trap avoid)

They can't clean floors if they've been made one with the magma.
