Dwarven noise complaints
« on: October 31, 2007, 11:22:00 pm »

Has anyone figured out if the 4-space thing still applies in the Z-axis?  In other words, if a dwarf's bedroom is directly over a workshop, how many floors away does it need to be for the poor dwarf to get some sleep?

I tested one floor below and the noise was an issue exactly one floor down on the spot exactly below.

Well, that could be problematic for the "department store" design ("third floor, housing district, fifth floor, heavy industry, going up!"), unless carefully structured.  I wonder how far up and down it goes?

The old version caused noise within 4 tiles of workshops.  Mining is worse, though: 14 tiles.  You're probably just going to have to live with that one.

Okay, I did a couple experiments with a "starter fortress" I'm running to get the hang of the changes.

Result:  noise complaints within 4 levels of a workshop.  5 or more levels away, and the dwarves sleep like babies.

Not sure how any diagonals may affect things (three squares up, one west, for instance).  Further trials continue.
