Not to mention "mysterious linkups" between screw pumps. Take that, physics!

I started my first game (currently ongoing) on a map with a volcano and an aquifer. After a bit of unsuccessful messing around with pumps, I dug a 5x5 shaft all the way down the the aquifer and filled it with lava. Thus I now have  a nice big square of obsidian on the aquifer level.

Next I cooled the pool of lava on top of the obsidian with some water leaving me with a nice waterproof shaft of stone leading straight down to the under-rock. simply dig stairs down this and you have another method to get past aquifers.

(I also spent 10 min drawing out paper plans for the channeling system allowing me to do this. I have never made notes on a course of action in a game before so good work toady!)
