You people don't get it.

Unless you took the time to build your underground farm on muddy terrain, you always get stacks of five plants from one seed.

edit: why does this place not have underline

for example, one planted pig tail seed can produce at max a pig tail[5] that when brewed will make a Dwarven ale[25].  The quantity produced from a seed is modified at most by the Farming skill of the dwarf planting the seed.  Fertilizing your fields also positively modifies crop yields.

Thus, to get the most booze crammed into a single barrel, you'll want a couple Legendary Growers working your fields.  So have a couple (1-3) dedicated growers plant crops and harvest your crops and no one else.  Harvesting the crop also gives skill in Grower so make sure you visit the orders menu and toggle Only farmers harvest.  They'll skill up pretty fast.

It doesn't matter where you plant, your crops will mostly be [1]s and [2]s unless your Grower is very skilled.

EDIT:  A great way to get a couple hundred booze fast is to buy the breweable plants from the caravan.  They always come in [5]s and if you brew 'em up before anyone eats them you'll have nice [25] barrels.  Cheap too, can get 'em first caravan with only a few stone crafts.

So...are you saying that if you build a farm plot on bare stone, you get five plants per seed? Because you can't do that. Or are you talking about making farms on sand, loam, and the like? I have farms on sand and they certainly don't generate five plants to a seed. I know because every time my miner decides to go harvest plants, I follow him to see how well my farmers are producing. Usually it's 2-3 plants per seed. I'm quite certain of this. I don't have a muddy-stone farm on my current fort, but I'm nigh-certain that previous ones also didn't get five plants per seed.

I'd be really careful about asserting things that most people don't agree with. At the very least go make a farm and check on it. It doesn't take long to make a pocket world, embark on a 2x2 zone, make a farm plot, and see what results you get.

I'm talking soil.

And hell, I can do that no problem as soon as I get done with school and have a video to boot.
