Booze bomb trap designs
« on: April 21, 2008, 11:25:00 pm »

Yeah, I'm bringing this topic back into the public eye.  We need to focus our dwarven engineers on designing better pyrotechnics!

So, here are a couple ideas for booze bomb traps:

Dig a single-tile channel in the hallway of your choice, preferably near the middle, and then pipe magma to that location so that you end up with a lovely little glowing tile in your hall.  Above that, place a one-tile retracting bridge, and above that a garbage dump.  Mark a barrel of booze (or several) for dumping, and then wait until targets arrive.  When they do, pull the lever to release the bridge, thus dropping the stuff into the magma.  This has the added bonus of destroying all the junk that ended up in the dump zone above the magma pit.

The next idea involves channelling out a significant portion of the hallway and then paving over the opens space with grates.  Underneath, put a booze stockpile and get some drinks in there until you feel it has been fully "loaded", then block it off from access.  When critters arrive, get some magma in there.   Make sure to put a magma-proof drain in the booze room.

I'd really like to see a working booze trap in action...  I've got a couple more ideas, but I've gotta go get some breakfast right now.  Back in a tiff.

What exactly is a tiff? Aside from that..Wouldnt you get more of a blast if you had the booze on the same level as the target? Just spill a drop off magma via over head flood gates onto the booze barrel. Does flaming booze even do any thing? I lit one up in adventure mode one time and all I got was a cloud of booze...not a firey death.

Clouds of booze=old version steam traps.

Sounds like the fancy, foreign equivalent of a jiffy.

I may have talked about this in an earlier thread, but firesnakes set items they come into contact with on fire. If you can catch one, say using an animal trap, and then release it in the middle of a booze pile, the results will be devestating.

That raises a question:  What's the most effective ignition mechanism?  If you're gonna use magma you may as well flood the halls with it and melt invaders.  Releasing fire snakes and such seems a bit tricky since vermin do that wacky teleportation nonsense (they don't really move).

Hmm.  Maybe place the pile around a grate leading to a magma pit.  Dump a couple bars of something that'll boil into it (e.g. certain metals) and let the gas ignite the barrels.  Would that work reliably?

I dunno, seems like it would take a while for the bars to boil over. Plus, booze bombs in general seem to be expensive to make. To get one powerful enough to wipe out an entire siege, you need all the barrels, then the booze to go in them, then you gotta use the aforementioned bars, or any of a number of impractical detonating methods...

How about a fire man behind a fortification, with a fireproof floodgate to expose him as needed. Pull the lever, when goblins are in his sight range, he fireballs them and blows up the trap. Problem is, would he get killed by the explosive backdraft?

It's not that difficult to have hordes of barrels with booze in them.  In fact, some fortresses have a booze overflow where they have to kill the brewing jobs to prevent everything from getting clogged up.

It gives you a reason to import something from the trade caravans if you don't have access to trees of your own, or you can just get a really big tower-cap farm.

So we've got three main methods of detonation:  dropping the barrels into magma, dropping magma onto the barrels, and using a fire creature to ignite the barrels.

Would be fun to see some tests on this...   Bombs away!

I'll do some experimentation later today. For reference, though... Which metals will boil in magma?

I haven't had any luck thus far dropping ale into lava. For my next experiment I'm going to see if I can safely generate some lava mist.

Most likely not, the "dust wall" shock-wave effect would just knock him around and the fire itself won't hurt him.

In fact, if I have the time, I'm gonna make that design you mentioned... interesting...

I'm not worried about a dust-wall effect. I'm just not sure if fire men are explosion proof; the explosion could travel through the fortification and blow them up.

collapsing floor tiles into magma creates mist anyways, just lost a dwarf to this recently :P
