Just got this fresh off an elven trader:

As the elves arrived I spotted a nice highwood cage containing a giant tiger, in some circuits known as a kobold removal tool. An anti-kobold guard was just what we needed as they were growing bolder by the minute. It was only yesterday that they ran (!) off with a giant corkscrew. So when our broker negotiated a good deal including the tiger, we were quick to accept. Little did we know that the animal loving elves were selling damaged merchandise, though in retrospect they were awfully keen on running off after the trade was concluded, a feature which we at the time attributed to their fear of wooden fortresses.

Anyone else with any dwarf fortress related trade mishaps?

My Grizzly bear was perfectaly ok (and terribly efficient and mangling kobolds)

are you on a cold or freezing biome? cold in the old version (and maybe new version) would hurt/kill animals in cages the traders brought - though usually they would be dead not slightly injured.

Those brain and spine injuries will never heal.  I'd say you got taken.

Hehe, yeah. Hoping to get another next caravan. With a bit of luck there´ll be lots of baby giant tigers around in a few years.

After fooling around on the choose locationscreen trying to make up my mind, I´m not sure what temperature it is. However, the rivers only freeze for a handful of days mid-winter so it´s probably atleast temperate.

I cant wait for the elves to come to me, I have an aquifier so absoloutlry everything i have is made of wood, (starting to have to travel miles for it now) they will take one look at my fort and faint thinking of the hundreds of trees that died making it

Same here. Was able to trade for a block of stone to make a screwpump though. Placed the screwpump above the aquifier, dug down, picked as much stone as I could and then used it to make another pump to keep the water from seeping into the layer below the aquifier.

I was going to check if it affected other caravancarried animals as well, but this time the caravan only had one animal carried.

That sure is a bit more severe. I guess it´s easier to avoid getting tricked on that one though, as "dead" is a status you can see in the cage contents menu while trading.

Could it be that the game tracks the movement of the caravan all the way from their civilization and any event and/or bad weather while travelling kills off the animals? I must remember to check for wounds on the actual traders and packanimals next time.

In other news, the above tiger and jaguar are now covered in 4-5 pages worth of blood and gore from countless goblins trying to sneak through my meetinghall and into the barracks upstairs. Since they never leave the meetinghall due to their wounds they´re always ready to tear thieves to pieces. Guess the purchase turned out great after all...
