There hasn't been an update to Dwarf Fortress since Jan
« on: June 26, 2007, 09:31:00 am »

I was looking to try the latest version of Dwarf Fortress but this is what is shown on the website:

(v0.23.130.23a, 4.8 MB, posted January 18, 2007. Requires Windows 98+, ~100MB Disk Space, 128MB RAM)

Is that really the latest version?

The new version is going to be so uber it can afford to miss the umlauts off itself, so it's taking a long time.

sofakng, there have been huge changes introduced since Toady added randomised fortress starting locations (as appoesd to the you arrive at a 'cliff wall' left->right layout)... and then he decided to make it 3D, which then required complicated fluid dynamics, pumps, and what not...

So, its going to be a completely new sort of game. Well worth waiting for me thinks. Just play the version on the website for the time, there's a large amount of information and support from the community on it.

And lots of detail on the wiki: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/

And lots of examples of forts the DF Map Archive: http://mkv25.net/dfma/

I was curious about this; is there any way to know how far Toady's getting in the development of the next version? I've seen all the lists of  what's supposed to be coming in the next release and what's been finished, but there doesn't seem to be any clear indicator of how far development is getting.

Uh, the daily development log is pretty useful I've found.

He does delete things on the devlog list [as he completes them]. It's considerably shorter today then it was 3 days ago.

Oh great Toady, may we have but a taste of this great compile?

Even it if was truly uberbuggy I would gladly let it set a sacrificial PC on fire in return for but a moments play on the current code.

It'll be uberbuggy when it's released. No need to get a preview.

Maybe interesting would have been a better choice of words. But the uberbugginess does add something.

Heh, man, bugs these days aren't worth mentioning.
Back in the old days, you'd get one unhappy dwarf, and he'd hit another dwarf, and then suddenly it was every dwarf for himself, with dwarves killing each other left and right, and the sherriff wading through them, severing their limbs.

You'd end up with one dwarf left, if you were lucky, and everything would be great... until the immigrants came and it all started again!
