Something has triggered a pressure plate!
« on: July 03, 2017, 01:47:49 pm »

Um, yes, so I got this announcement "Something has triggered a pressure plate!"

Sure enough, my controlled cave-in collapse trap (intended for the toughest of Forgotten Beasts) was somehow triggered - not by a FB, but by some invisible creature? I force-quit the program to load the save back up again (luckily I had just saved before this event), and I watched the events transpire again. This time, eyes glues to the scene, I could clearly see a locked door mysteriously open on its own - no creature in sight - no unusual creature in the Units list - and it proceeded to then kill itself by activating the pressure plate that collapses a support holding the roof up. BOOM! The cave-in decimated whatever was underneath. Doing some searches, and people are thinking Gremlins are associated with certain "string dump" phrases rarely encountered.

Has anyone ever had this happen to you?

If anyone wants my save game, I've archived it for future reference.

UPDATE: So, I dug out the collapsed section of the trap, and, sure enough, there is a corpse of a gremlin. First time I've ever seen one of these. Crazy. The funny thing is, the pressure plate was set to water, not creatures, so this thing must have intentionally triggered it to create havoc and unknowingly killed itself. Oh, the irony!

Yes, gremlins are stealthed until discovered, trap avoiders, pick lockers, and random lever pullers. If you have a pressure triggered by water when a locked door is opened, a gremlin can definitely do that in the process of passing through the locked door.
I've made quite a few gremlin traps (lever on a support causing a cave-in to stun the gremlin as it falls onto cage traps) and tend to try to catch them. They petition to become citizens, but are still treated as animals, so retraining when they become citizens is a pain (DFHacking them to completely tame upon becoming citizens is my way of dealing with that). They're also too small to wear any clothes that can be made (half the size of a kobold). I've never gotten them to breed, though.

Actually, if you use Therapist to assign their labors, they can self-produce armor and clothing that fits their (tiny) size. The only weapons they can wield are Daggers and Spears though, as everything else is too large. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=15096.msg7314182#msg7314182

Hm, I never thought to try to get them to produce clothes for themselves (and certainly wouldn't have expected it to work to produce something not on the details list). Thanks for the info!

One time I had a gremlin sneak into my fort and open a troll cage. Haven't had any other incidents involving them after that.

My bucket list is to capture breeding kobolds.  Gremlins seems to rare, but I did find them around when embarking on a cave (kobold)
