Switching between layers
« on: June 28, 2017, 04:11:43 am »

Hail, people of the forum, I recently downloaded the PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack 0.43.05-r07, and started playing fortress mode, but I can't seem to be able to switch between layers, however hard I try. I tried <,>,,,.,[,],{,}, and most of the numpad, and all of those while holding SHIFT, but nothing happened as far as I noticed. Can I ask someone familiar with the version to tell me how can I observe and manage different vertical layers?

I think the problem is that I have a hungarian keyboard and < and > is already on SHIFT+í and SHIFT+y. I guess I have to rebind those. Is there anything on non-shift < and >, or can I use those?

EDIT: In fact, can I use mouse 4&5 (mouse side buttons), and where can I bind those? I tried to look for some kind of .ini, but with no success. :/

It doesn't have to do with the shift key as such (Bearskie is actually wrong, as the US keyboard strokes are SHIFT-',' and SHIFT-'.' to reach '<' and '>'), as the keys to move up and down are '<' and '>'. Depending on the keyboard layout you'd then have to reach them using shift (or not: in my case they're on the same key, one with shift and one without).
The issue is probably rather one of your system sending the wrong codes to the game. If you're using Windows, you can have multiple keyboard layouts installed and shift between them, and the OS should send the key corresponding to what should be on the keyboard at that location for that layout. I assume other OS' provide corresponding functionality.
My guess is that you somehow have the OS sending US keyboard layout codes to the game. If Hungarian keyboards use the QWERTY layout (which probably isn't the case if '>' is SHIFT-'y', but how do you get 'Y'?) you won't detect anything strange for ordinary letters, but other characters tend to move around. On a normal US keyboard the '<' key is SHIFT of the bottom row third to the last key, while '>' is SHIFT of the bottom row second to the last key. If trying those key strokes with DF moves the view up/down you most likely have a keyboard layout issue.

On the first tab at the bottom of Lazy Newb Pack window there is Key Bindings list. And on of the options ('laptop with mouse' if i recall correctly) allows to use mouse scroll to change z-levels. Also you can find those files from the list in LNP/keybinds directory and change them to whatever you want or even create your own set of settings.

Oh shit, I meant AltGr when I wrote SHIFT in SHIFT+Y/Í. I am now content to rebind the up/down to mouse 4&5, so I took the piece of code in the laptop with keyboard that looks like this:
[BIND:CURSOR_UP_Z:REPEAT_SLOW]
    [KEY:<]
    [KEY:,]
[BIND:CURSOR_DOWN_Z:REPEAT_SLOW]
    [KEY:>]
    [KEY:.]
And I'll try to change it to MOUSE 5 and MOUSE 6, I'll edit this comment if It had any effect. :D

EDIT: I can't get the scrolling going by using SHIFT or AltGr, or both. I couldn't get the mouse 4&5 working either, can some kind soul tell me the code "name" of those buttons, so I can fit them in the text file?

Why don't you use the in-game key bindings menu? Hitting esc from the main menu should get you there.

OOOOooo, I had no idea we had access to such luxuries. :P
Thank you so much, that worked perfectly, and sorry for making a thread for such a trivial thing, I'm still very new!

Except me.  When Toady released the first version of DF I was like "Finally, I've been playing this game literally forever and now it actually exists"

:P
