How about an adventure mode challenge?
Rags to Riches:
Start with the Play now! feature. get to legendary in at least one weapon skill, armour wearing skill and wrestling skill.

Should be interesting...

*shrug* so have them farm or something.

I do that and watch 'xyz has become a farmer' with glee.  The only problem with this is that (it seems) the more skills a dwarf has the more likely they will go fey or such with the skill that is not used.

Bringing down the mountain.

Dig out everything before the magma and make your fort on the far side. Put a support every 7th tile before the magma and link all of them to a lever.

When invaders come, let them enter and then pull the lever.

Challenge: Kill 50% of an invading army with 1 use of your uber stonefall trap. And film it.

only problem i can see with this is farming
how are you going to be able to use floodgates wthout any walls (floodgates do need a wall next to them, dont they)?

EDIT:
To operate this theoretical idea, open the right floodgate, which will fill all channel tiles. Then open the left floodgate to flood the area between the channels. Next close the left floodgate, and then the right floodgate. Farm.

None of these produce never-ending floods because the floodgate at the river can be closed.  The second option is the most efficient in terms of space and construction, and the third is the only option with serious uncontrolled-flooding potential.

Umm, are you sure about these?  The problem lies mostly on the floodgate next to the river.  It lets water out from all sides, not just to the channel.

If a floodgate is adjacent to an empty channel and next to a river, it simply "sucks" water out of the river into the channel.

Floodgates only flood in all directions if they are adjacent to a filled channel.
