Arcade 2D Space games ?
« on: April 24, 2017, 01:19:50 pm »

Hey guys,

I want to play a game where I control a Space Ship from a "top-down" view, with arcade-y controls.

I think I remember a game or two like this, but I can't find any, anymore.

I've tried Starsector, but the ships feel like they're so heavy, they can't turn and they have so much inertia... I don't like it.

I've tried Battlevoid Harbinger, but it's not really a "control you ship" game, but more of a "control your fleet" game.

Any idea, guys ?

Ever look at Space Pirates and Zombies (http://store.steampowered.com/app/107200/) or Space Rangers (2? :HD? Not sure which was the one I played...)?

They're not very arcade-y, but they're in the general vicinity to the two mentioned.

I've played both of those (don't remember which Space Ranger version), but I think I felt like both of these were too much "loot based".

I'll give them another try anyway :)

Maybe look at some twin stick shooters?  Some of them have sci-fi / spaceship window dressing, and they're definitely on the arcade action side of things.

Thanks for all the games, guys, I'll look at them and come back to you.

aristabulus, I'm not too hot on the twin stick shooters. What I like in the space shooters is that, generally, you can try to aim at specific parts of the enemy ships to disable them, and that there are convoys and freighters escorts to eliminate, this sort of thing.

Also, many space shoots tend to be much more oriented on the customization part of the ships, though this tends to deviate into loot-fests, where the ship is only as good as the RNG wants you to be, as you salvage stuff from previous battles and missions.

If you are looking for one with part based damage/disabling/destruction.. Wayward Terran Frontier is a good example of that. Quite dynamic destruction. Is playable, not complete yet though.

Stardrive 1 had a "control your flag ship" bit, that wasn't too bad. Fair enough, it's a 4X, so maybe not what you want. But it's kinda easy as 4X's go (ie: there's horribly effective and broken strats available), so you could probably play a lot of the game just puttering around in your flag ship if you wanted to. Cue up a tonne of PD corvettes for support, some marines or bombers, then just warp around the place bringing the pain to all.

You might want to check out sol trader, it doesn't very much fit what you're describing but there is a portion of the game that requires top down space travel involving 2D 'arcade-like' space combat depending on your occupation, and it doesn't cost much, but I would go ahead and read the reviews first. It's on steam. Glad I could help!

I remember playing a lot of kobo in university.  http://www.olofson.net/kobodl/  It ran on Solaris computers!
