Is there a min size?  Is it based on the size of your fort?  Can you use two taverns when the first gets too small or do you need to expand the first to keep dwarves happy?
Thanks!

This is a game which calculates the volume of blood in every creature it generates so it knows how much alcohol it would have to consume to get drunk, an update which, remarkably, ended up covering people's fortresses in cat vomit.

I make them as big as the area designation screen allows because I like having all my dwarves in one place. But any number of taverns, libraries, etc. will work. Libraries in particular might require more space than one area can allow if your world is really old, as there will be lots and lots of books, copies of books, and other manuscripts and they can't all fit in one giant room, even with bookcases.

At first I thought that having one big room just made it easier to get room quality up. But I've seen nothing that indicates taverns and other "locations" even have room quality. I've never seen a dwarf go "I listened to a performance in a legendary tavern." So if you want small rooms, I see no reason not to. I'm not sure there really is a minimum space, but the more space in a tavern the more stuff your dwarves can do in there. My dwarves seem to really like line dancing 30 squares from one end of the room to another.

Taverns and temples are considered somewhat flawed by DF if they don't have a free dance floor of a min size of 5*5. A single tile tavern has been involved in rather severe FPS stuttering as characters try to path to the single tavern tile and it's occupied.
For nuptial encouragement a 3*3 tavern area for the two of them is sufficient, but I attach that to the main tavern.

Having a large tavern may possibly have a negative effect on socialization (although it's rather poor when not encouraged with rather blunt means anyway) according to some theories, if the people are spread out too far away from each other to interact (whatever that distance is...).

As indicated, a "location" can contain several zones that do not have to be contiguous, all associated to the same tavern/library/temple entity.

I once made the mistake of making dedicated temples to each known deity, open for visitors. I ended up with something like 35 out of a maximum 50 visitors hanging out in the most popular temple for years on end (praying for half a year before hauling the sorry ass over to make the petition they came to file wasn't unusual). The 7*7 temple was very crowded as a result...
