Screw Pump inactive
« on: March 26, 2017, 05:57:00 pm »

So I am trying out both Screw Pumps for the first time, as well as the Double Slit method for the first time.

And I'm having an issue with the Screw Pump not doing anything, aside from tiring out my Dorfs.

I'm trying to pump out the first level of water from the Aquifer, and I have the Screw Pump set up, a Dorf on it, and it's pumping From West.

However, it says  Inactive in big red letters at the top when I [q] it.

Below that it says Total Power: 0
Total Power Needed: 10
Stable

and then it says I can hit Enter to stop pumping manually.

This is entirely new for me, and I feel like I'm finally peeking out past the Intermediate Dorf Fortress level I've been stagnating at for a while. If I can get Screw Pups working I can envision all sorts of possibilities. would appreciate any help.

What features are in the tile it's pumping from?  e.g., can't pump from stairs.

*sighs*

that would do it.

EDIT:

It is trying to pump from Down Stairs, like the wiki guide says.

I will try another one with Down Ramps.

The Pump platform is on Floors built on top of Stairs.

EDIT2: Okay, wow. That works. woo. so much for my stair stack, though. eh.

EDIT3: *facepalm*

yeah. all I needed to do was channel out the stairs.

Manual pumping does not generate power. Manual operation replaces the usage of power, hence the somewhat confusing display.

As you found, you need to channel out your source tile and build stairs there afterwards. However, you need (down) stairs in the tile beside the pump tile to allow dorfs to get down below to work. If it's any consolation, I tend to suffer "dry pumping" one or a few times when I pierce an aquifer, despite having done it quite a few times. I'm slowly getting faster at realizing what's wrong, though.
