Mushroom names and types???
« on: March 10, 2017, 06:27:50 pm »

So I've decided to change mushrooms became for names like "plump helmet" bother me, as well as having a kobold race making "dwarven wine". However I am drawing a blank.

What are good semi-realistic farmable underground plant names and properties, like alcohols?

I'm thinking replacing plump helmets with "common white cave" or something?

Just looking for inspiration.

I did a quick Google search for "mushrooms that grow in caves".  The first few results referred to a cave in France that cultivates a species of edible mushroom called...

Blue feet.

I'm done.

Here are some mushroom recognition charts:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fungiculture

It looks like a lot of mushrooms are known by french or latin names.  So casque-dodu or galeati-pinguis instead of plump helmet.

Instead of "dwarven" you could use a term like "digger", "tunneler", "burrower" or "miner".  Miner's Wine, Miner's Ale.  Or just cave.  Cave Wine.  Tunnel Ale.  Burrow Booze.  I have a mod world where there are no dwarves, but I've kept the name "dwarven" on underground crops.  I even invented a new one, dwarven lemonade from grotto lemons.  So naming them after some other kind of cave creature might work.  Maybe trolls, troglodytes or gnomes.  Trog Wine.  Troll's Rum, Trollish Rum.  Molemarion Ale.

It would make more sense to me if fermented fungi had some sort of specific name, like how "wine" mostly means made of fruit, "blaand" is made of milk, "rum" I think is made of sugar and "beer" I think is made of grain.  Maybe just "booze".  So it becomes Broad Casque Booze, Screw-Tail Booze, Cave Grain Booze, Sweet Pod Booze, etc.  Or make up a word, like dwelk or shrem.  Broad Casque Dwelk.  Screw-Tail Shrem.  I don't know.
