Artifacts Associated With Positions
« on: April 06, 2017, 05:03:52 am »

It would be cool if there were artifacts associated with various positions.
For example, "The Crown of the Mountainhome", an artifact crown worn by the current dwarven monarch and passed down in the line of succession.
Or, an amulet worn by the high priest of a certain religion, a sword wielded by the city executioner, etc.

As far as I know there isn't anything like this planned for the next artifact update, but it would be cool if there was.

Edit: Also, there could be positions derived from artifacts. For example, "Bearer of the Stone Sword", "Keeper of the Heavenly Key", and things like that. In other words, positions that depend on the artifacts themselves.

Well, you can do it by assigning artifacts to dwarfs as military equipment.  The game doesn't keep track of it, but it should still be entertaining :-)

Well, artifacts belong to families now, so when the society and law updates come around no doubt there will be royal families. Then it's not too much of a leap to have the head of the family as the keeper of the artifact. Same with holy artifacts. Since they're kept in temples, when property is defined properly, it'll belong to the head priest in certain types of religious groups.

Besides ownership its a very interesting concept, given that artifacts can be both created by moodable creatures (so a king level position dwarf once per dynastic link could create a position related artifact) or that in high magical settings where gods are very much active in the world, they could bequeath a heavenly crown unto the ruler.

That and/or the associated familiarity with it and additional history of a monarch being particularly attached to wearing that crown gives it a revered status.

This creates a set of interesting problems and tragic situations though.  If the a powerful magic crown (or other item) was bequeathed upon the original dwarf monarch in Yr0 by the gods and it only works in the hands of that person and their legitimate heirs what happens if we end up with a particularly inept or tyrannical descendant who then gets overthrown.  However this causes the magic crown to lose it's power since the line has now been broken.  Yet if the powerful magic of crown is the only thing that has kept rampaging goblins from overrunning the dwarf kingdom for centuries then the result is that the goblins prevail and overrun the dwarf kingdom.

E.I = Fantasy magic artifacts done right.

Now you must lead a fellowship of dwarves & humans (but no elves, they smell) to return the rightful heir and deliver the crown from the hands of darkness to bring peace to the land again.
