Can't find Shell Opal
« on: November 13, 2007, 01:19:00 pm »

I'm trying to find shell opal for a carpenter (my fort's only one), but I'm having no luck.  I've tried reveal.exe, but for some odd reason I can't find any gems at all; can I not count on being able to find gems with reveal.exe anymore?  This is a big problem for me right now D:

You can find gems using reveal.exe still however there is no guarantee that the gems exist on your map. Because of how many gems there are now and the fact that there are only certain gems in certain areas it is very hard to full fill an artifact demand that needs gems. So your carpenter is doomed. And the fort is in trouble.

Gems are pretty hard to find now in most areas. Some gems are limited to rock types.
Some are even limited to rock types within rock types. Like Demantoid. Those are found within Chromite clusters, which themselves are found within olivine clusters, which are only found in layers of gabbro stone.
It seems like mountains are usually the best location to find the most variety of gems.

Remember that you can trade for cut gems now. That might end up being your only source of gems in some cases.

Eh, he went berserk.  Killed my best mason and spread blood around the fort whilst mangling another dwarf's right forearm.

That Bastard, now how am I supposed to run a blood-free fort?!
