Game crashes too often to be playable

I just downloaded DF after a few years off, fired up the new LNP, and started to get into the game again.  Unfortunately, the game crashes around once a season.  Even with seasonal autosaves on, this is making the game too frustrating to play for me, as reloading the old save and seeing all of the lost work is just too heartbreaking for me to handle more than five times in one session.  Is everyone having this problem?  I've tried multiple worlds, and even multiple computers, but I feel like I'm missing something vital.

Vanilla pretty much never crashes.
Oh, sorry, weapon traps are suffering from a crash bug, don't use them. Apart from that it's very stable.

Must be something in your starter pack.

There's a big gap between "no starter pack" and "ascii".
You don't need a starter pack. Adding tilesets, graphics, dfhack and so on by yourself is not only a great way to learn about how DF is put together, but also makes it much easier to pinpoint what's going wrong.

Random guess, because I'm not up to date with what's going on in packs and dfhack, but try disabling TWBT. That often seems to be the cause of crashes (no idea about its current state though).

I actually had a vanilla crash today. Involving hunters not being able to find a animal path or something x 10,000 until it just crashed. What do I do about that?

Alright.  I guess this is the day I finally look at the bare ASCII.

Bare ascii is worth learning and not that hard. I play strictly vanilla. Have a fort with 175 dwarves, library, temple, and a couple taverns. It's really simple.

Yeah. There's the occasional crash. But not once a month crashes as op is getting.

I ran into the dreaded Nemesis crash on one of my previous worlds. It was just a certain patch of the world which seemed like any other but would crash whatever direction I approached it from. Just got to remember it's there and walk around it.

As to what you can do, crash bugs are the highest priority. Just upload your save to the bug tracker (helps if you can replicate it of course).

I play almost vanilla, but my tired old eyes need a slightly bigger tileset than either of the ones included, so I use Taffer 20x20.

I turned off TWBT and the crashes are now yearly, which is manageable.

I've had the game crash twice in two days, because of this pathfinding even asked Toady what I could do to prevent it, fix it. No response.

Are you using weapon traps?
Doesn't matter; the OP uses LNP, which is 43.03.

Well he's not going to respond to all 6000 bug reports at once. Upload your save, explain how to make it happen and wait like everybody else. If the cause is known by the time of the next release (My guess, July, but who knows), it'll be fixed. Like I said, crash bugs take priority over most other things.
