Falling into pond is safer than the dirt
« on: November 13, 2007, 12:00:00 am »

I just had my Dungeon Master bruise his spine while removing a floor and falling 2 stories.  My Captain of the Guard has had a spinal injury for 2 years that hasn't healed.

Anyhow, I was curious what would happen if a dwarf fell into deep water instead.  I tried it, and the dwarf was stunned but had no injuries!  Here is the video: http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-146-splashdwarf

note that in my testing 3 z-levels of water did NOT stop kittens and puppies from splattering when dropped from a hight of 15 z-levels.

so if there is some protective effect from landing in water, it's limited.

Also do they suffer the risk of drowning after being stunned?

Water only has so much give. At that height, I bet it would be better than hitting the dirt, but it would still be like striking concrete.

they didn't splatter when they hit the water, they sunk all the way down (not even slowed by the water as far as I could tell) and splattered on the bottom.

I was going to test more levels of water to see if it would ever stop them from splattering but that with with the earlier version that lagged real bad so I abandoned the fort and have never gotten back around to testing it.

Hmmm we will have to keep dropping puppies until the mystery is solved.  How do you drop the animals?  Levers?  dumping?
