Animal Caretaking Labor Feeding Hungry Animals
« on: March 15, 2017, 09:08:12 am »

Animal Caretaking currently doesn't do much if anything. Since I think pet owners can feed their pet if it is a grazer, the idea is Animal Caretaking should do the same for unpastured/hungry grazers.

This way if you happen to have a migrant wave that brings a cow, your animal caretaker will automatically feed them if you forget to pasture it. (and probably get some XP for the task). Great for feeding a War Elephant for example while it is pastured/chained near your entrance. If this also leads to dwarves collecting grazable grasses/mushrooms, it could be used sustaining larger animals like Elephants in smaller rooms, or actually feed picky animals like Pandas.

Also, hello Bay12! I haven't posted in a while(years).

What the f*ck is wrong with you?
DF doesn't have a learning curve. It has a sheer cliff face. And you have to climb it with nothing but a keyboard.

FantasticDorf

hi hi hi and welcome back.

I regret to inform you this is already partially a feature, animals in cages will be brought food when they are hungry, and as such are a good place to put animals that are not currently pasturing and you have spare crops/prepared meals and (buggily) meat on hand to feed your grazers. For instance you could feed grazers dog meat biscuits on a glacier embark to keep them going for another month while you milk them for cheese.
  • Pets are still fed by their owners, dwarf fortress players have also learnt that assigning a specific kind of grazer pet (a panda that only eats bamboo in a certain biome instead of all grass in general etc.) will allow you to keep them alive with concentrated care & attention ideal in war animal scenarios (panda bears are large animals anyway)

> You can further specialise what animals are to eat what & what dwarves are on standby to attend to (feeding giant elepants with small grazing space) the needs of the animal in a cage (also goes for milking & shearing) by putting them inside a workplace restricted burrow.
