Dwarf with a Master
« on: February 05, 2017, 04:56:58 am »

I noticed my dwarves were flashing blue and after investigation it seems they are simulating their gods. There are four (five after unpausing to observe) dwarves who say they are "Simulate *Their Deity's name*" and they're just standing there (simulating a god I suppose). This is all well and good and I think it's just a normal part of the temple behavior.
My bad they're just performing, their "Deities" were actually names of performances.

What I'm really wondering is why one of my dwarves has a relationship with someone and that they're his "Master" (yellow, just like a Deity).  I'm assuming that this dwarf was once a slave and somehow got free, but the relationship stayed? I can't find any of my other dwarves with this tag. I can't view a description of the named Master, as I can with a Deity or being in the fort. This leads me to conclude that this dwarf is a slave to an off-fort Master.

Any ideas?

You're a little bit off. The dorf is an apprentice to a master in a master/apprentice relationship. Sufficiently skilled sapients are said to take apprentices, and that should be possible within a fortress as well (I haven't seen any such relations forming in my fortresses, that's why I say "are said to". I have no info indicating it does not work).

Its not a insidious as it sounds.

That dwarf has took a apprenticeship in a particular craft (read skills or legends mode) to learn from a master. It does share the same terminology as a clown master/ slave master but its not the same thing, it just means they outsourced their learning of a subject.

Ah, much less interesting than a run-away Dwarf slave.
But hopefully the master will follow their pupil to my fort.

It will probably not happen, but I agree it would be nice.

Slaves happen in the game, BTW.  I *think* only humans enslave other races (apart from goblins snatching babies).  But slaves are a bit strange.  It seems that (just like snatched babies), the only thing that happens is that the civilisation changes.  I've seen slaves become barons before.

I've seen 1 time just the once from a human civ arrive with their slave master, they were following behind but i've never seen it since given it must be very rare occurance to happen that somebody of actual importance to own a slave personally arrives into a civ entity that abhors slavery.

Seems to be the leaders of a given site are the masters unless they are implicitly linked as a slave under the monarch (current arrangement in dark fortress civ, the law giver isn't a slave owner so wouldn't count, but a demon lord monarch technically owns ALL goblins and citizens enslaved by the entity)
