Passive giant cave spider?
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:54:16 pm »

So, I was dealing with performance troupes and migrants, when I got a message saying "giant cave spider has destroyed a door". Sure enough, there was a giant cave spider, and a valuable legendary miner was nearby it. I promptly sent in a squad of crossbowdwarves, who walked directly up to the spider and began shooting it from there. About half of them died.

But, then, something really weird happened; all my civilians went in to recover the weapons and armor of the dead, and the spider completely ignored them. As in, they walked within the same tile of it and it did nothing, not even trying to attack them. I checked, it was still alive, and fully conscious. I sent in another marksdwarf and the spider immediately came back to its senses and mauled him, but then went back to ignoring everyone else as they picked up the poor bastards stuff.

Can anybody explain this? I heard something about trolls being docile, except for the occasional smashing of buildings, due to how intelligent creatures now behave; are GCSs sapient as well?

EDIT: Oh my god there's a fucking child and its pet chick down in the caverns sleeping next to the spider now. It isn't attacking it. This is the most heartwarming thing I've ever seen in this game.

I don't think is limited to cavern creatures either. The only "dangerous" surface animals that actually appear to be dangerous are the ones in water (giant alligators, giant snapping turtles, and the like).
In the case of the GCS, it may actually be too busy trying to destroy something else to bother with civilians. If building destroyers come too close to their destruction target they can't destroy it, and they don't have the sense to move away a step to get out to range.

Specifically linked to fistfighting casual encounters.

Had a zombie leopard fight one of my dwarves once, it backed away and was ignored by dwarves afterwards as it crawled off the map, so aboveground creatures too. (even undead ones at that if we are looking specifically at large predators that actively pick fights with dwarves)

I had this happen with a cave dragon, I sent my most prestigious soldier to fight it, and then when he lost, the cave dragon sat there and watched a miner collect his body peacefully.

I think the wiki said that GCSs will only attack military members and invaders.

I actually made a thread about this not long ago. I couldn't find even a single large predator, even giant versions, that would be in the slightest bit aggressive towards my dwarves or even their cats. It was ridiculous I had giant jaguars and packs of giant dingos fleeing from completely unarmed civilian dwarfs and the fortress cat over and over again. If you have a save handy please report it on Mantis so Toady can be made aware of the extent of the problem. It's a pretty serious bug that I'm not even sure he is even properly aware of.

Well, on the subject of bugs, visitors being announced as night creatures still hasn't been fixed. I just got a message saying "Kima Rulunushrat, Human Bard vampire is visiting".

UPDATE: The cave spider destroyed the last of the doors in the caverns, then began to move normally towards the rest of the fortress. I tried to send in my (new) marksdwarves, but only one actually got up to do anything. They spent about 5 minutes shooting the cave spider, without the spider fighting back at all. Previously, it instantly ran up to and killed any marksdwarves I sent to it, and now it's just completely docile.
