Well, you probably know this game and for those who do not.

Roblox is a free game that has children as a target audience. Yes, kids, at age of 10 or so.
In Roblox hundreds of players create their own games using the Roblox Editor or you can just play what anyone creates.

I am going to be honest and tell you that the game suffers from few problems.

-The community is very immature and most of the popular games are horrible click-baits with 0% creativity.
-The devs are completely careless about the community and sometimes display ignorance.
-If you are trying to create an advanced game using scripts and other features, except to update your game a lot because every once in a while the devs break your game every time a new version comes out.

So you may ask me why in my mind would I play the game?
These are my personal reasons.

  • The game allows you to script in Lua, so if you are turned off by the "simple" possibilities and wish for something advanced then I promise it is possible. There are games out there that are very well scripted rip-offs of games like DayZ or CS:GO
  • Very small % of the player-base likes to participate in war-groups. War-groups are basically pretend-military groups with a rank structure and their own rules. They are often diverse, with some ranging from colonial-era trough modern and sci-fi. These are completely ignored by the game devs but those communities still thrive. I am in one myself and I can say we are one of those "mature" groups. We have a good scripters and recently we have finished a new game at which our "base" is. At the base, other war-groups can come to raid us and claim imaginary victory, and we can do the same.

Pictures to give you an idea:
[This is just one game, there are hundreds of different "games".]
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-That is a dock, where you can buy boats of various sizes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-Military boats can have missiles and multiple players can cooperate on the same ship together to take down enemy ships.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-Our builders can create, beatiful cities. (Which you as an enemy can fight for)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-And little bit more bragging, this time with a night.[/spoiler]

And there many more games....

"Apocalypse Rising" https://www.roblox.com/games/1600503/Apocalypse-Rising - A game heavily inspired off DayZ, you are able to do pretty much everything in it as you can in DayZ.

"Phantom Forces" https://www.roblox.com/games/292439477/Phantom-Forces-New-gun-skins - Game that looks similar to BF3.

"Armored Patrol" https://www.roblox.com/games/1636712/Armored-Patrol-v8-6 - This is one of those "original" games, you are able to buy tanks and helicopters to fight against enemy while building bases and capturing "objectives.

(you can play without registering here https://www.roblox.com/games/?SortFilter=default&TimeFilter=0&GenreFilter=1
*You will need to download Roblox for the first time you try to play any game.

P.S: If you wish to play with me in the game, then register into Roblox and request to join this group: https://www.roblox.com/Groups/group.aspx?gid=32087
Message me at Steven2203 and I will make sure you get accepted into the group.

If you join that group, you will be allowed to defend the base I´ve shown in pictures. Participate in raids/defense and sometimes we organize space fights with fly-able space-ships.

One time I played a game with four pirate ships. There was a grappling hook, and the ships were fully destructible and would even sink if you destroyed a certain block deep inside. It was pretty fun, but unfortunately that kind of game seemed rare back then.

I'm not sure why you thought you needed to advertise roblox here of all places. Its a site thats is literally older than its target audience by now and still looks like ye olde ps1-era 3d crap, and without any good mechanics to keep itself relevant like runescape somehow has.

Well first and foremost, the group I advertised at bottom needs new recruits so I am somewhat shamefully trying to bait some people in. But it would be too rude to just post link with no context at all.

The group leaders are starting to be busy with jobs and life so the group is starting to go down hill.

And secondly, I think Roblox could get some attention even thought it doesn´t deserve much.
Dwarf Fortress community suffered trough horrible UI of DF, hardcore gameplay and eye-twitching graphics, I thought you guys could handle little bit of Roblox.

"still looks like ye olde ps1-era 3d crap"
Well, I do not know how olde ps1-era crap looks but does that matter? You are on Bay12 so you´ve played DF before right? Do you play with or without tilesets? (It is irrelevant actually).

As I said, I believe there ARE good things to be found on Roblox. I can show.

This person that works with our group modeled this
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And I believe there is so much more to be seen.

The onus for interesting mechanics in Roblox is mostly on the mapmakers. The "game" itself is more of a sandbox for making many small games. I enjoyed playing the interesting ones when I was younger, but then quickly grew tired of "SURVIVE X DISASTER", "HARDEST OBSTACLE COURSE EVER!" and a slew of terrible shooting arenas while the interesting stuff like dogfighting and ship battle maps were relegated to purgatory of no players.

That´s why I am recommending joining our group because I think it is 200% better experience than anything else you will do in Roblox.

I'd mostly been going off what I'd seen of my brother playing it, which is pretty much like Krevsin said: A jumble of basic shapes and a whole lot of shouting in chat trying to do...something. Apparently there are also virtual shirts for virtual sale.

The looks comment was mostly because as minimal as DF has for graphics, you can only look so bad in 2d, with 3d theres much more room for looking bad. That model though is pretty alright, props to your modeler guy Sebastian.

People actually interested in making something that didn't suck in Roblox?

Huh, I thought you all died out in the Great Intellect Purge of 2014.

In all seriousness, though, seeing that worm thing one of your team members modeled makes me excited.

Roblox kind of got me started on 3D gamedev, so I have some veneration for it. Even though I never made anything good, it taught me about things such as making assets, scripting and the importance of having a solid engine to work on.

And of course just how time-consuming and arduous actually making something good is. Younger me did not have the patience required nor the desire to look for outside help.

I had fun in Roblox, it just wore out fast with all the nonsensical chatter and the dime-a-dozen asset flip (before they would be called such) maps that kept reappearing in the most popular tab. I have no real interest to return to it but I wish all the best to your group and the project you have going on.

The model of the worm thing (it is chest-buster from the Alien movies), was designed by Cravitus who is excellent modeler and he made a lot of guns and vehicles for us.

To be clear, our group is basically an alliance made up of few other groups which work together and cooperate.
The alliance is called "United World Federation" and the group I advertised at the bottom of the page is Mobile Bloxxers group which is just one of the five groups in that alliance.

Cravitus is from "The United States Colonial Marine Corps" which follow the Alien movie franchise
You can join them here: https://www.roblox.com/Groups/group.aspx?gid=639722

If you get accepted, you can automatically participate in:

-Raids and defenses
-Patrols
-Trainings

When you join them, read their rules that are in this guide:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QqEhrMNHEOzm7Z0xNfa7ixMYD0jzGNAe2jR9nZGW_hQ/edit

If you are active, you will be noticed and most likely promoted.
At first showing up few times per week is enough and will get you promoted.
But if you wish to get one of those ranks which allow you to command people, you will have to do more than that.

In case you do not have a clear idea about raiding, it is essentially a battle where the USCM joins the server of the raided group and they have to capture the objective, or do anything that would result in victory.
This is all done trough combat of course, and sometimes the number of participants in raids are big (Maximum of 50 people per server) so low-end computers might have trouble.

Message me your Roblox nickname at Steven2203 and I will make sure you get accepted into the group.
Or you can send me PM here, also feel free to ask if you have any trouble.

I briefly got into Roblox again semi-recently in the brief period my laptop had Windows installed on it.
(But because Windows is a pain in the neck for me, I scrapped it eventually and Roblox was no more. Oh well.)

In that brief period of time however, I did have quite a bit of fun, way more than I would have expected.
Maybe it's just that I'm older now and can grasp the idea of programming and for all I know this has not really changed, but the Lua scripting API seemed great and nicely-documented, but it might have just been me being salty at The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+'s Lua API being in a much worse state comparatively more than anything.

Still, social anxiety making me unable to revel in the social aspect aside, I enjoyed it which is a nice change of pace considering that often times when I come back to a game, I get a feeling of "This used to be better in my day!" - not so much here.
(Of course the 'main' trunk of the community still felt hellish to interact with, but it's hard to expect much when it's targeted at, well, literal children, ones that I am not a part of anymore like I was back in the 2010 era.)

I enjoy the additions like improved lightning and smooth terrain and and the fact that as a new player you get actually half-decent looking cosmetics.

The games on display also seem to have improved in quality overall as well, even though most of them have some atrociously unwieldy custom UIs.

Might try to run this in Wine at some point, if only because I forked out a little bit of cash on COSMETICS™ for my new account and I'd kinda hate to leave it so early (I've had worse cases of 'sunk cost fallacy' than this but still).
