Will sold items still be in memory?
« on: January 30, 2017, 11:42:19 pm »

For example, I make 10000 mudstone blocks, and offer them to merchants, after the merchants leave, will the blocks still be in the memory?
The save of the game keeps growing in size, it seems.

Possibly referentially. The game probably keeps track of who you traded those blocks to. I remember another thread where it was agreed upon/brought to light that mobs are stored for a fort forever (they're essentially given a number so the game can quickly call for information based on the mob id number thing). I'd imagine items are the same way, but once the items are off map the game doesn't have to do temperature checks/wear checks/so forth on them, they're merely taking up a slot on the long number id list of items. Not positive, I'll see if I can find the post tomorrow and edit my post here accordingly.

Going by an old thread ( FPS issue on slow PCs: Worse than before? Or same? ), they'll stop majority of their FPS draining when you save and restart after traders have left.

It's also worth noting that if you go near the fortress in adventure mode iirc you can see all the old wagons nearby in area what would be off-map to the fortress.
Have not tried this myself, though.

Don't think this happens any more, never seen it myself and I spend a lot of time wandering to my old fortresses. Wagons and merchants who were around when you retired would buggily end up joining the fortress population and could often be found drinking together in the tavern. An attempted fix seems to have got rid of the wagons (but still leaves the traumatized merchants behind with memories of the wagon's death fresh in their profiles...)

That's exactly what I've seen too.  If you want to unretire your fortress again, never retire when there is a chance of a caravan coming (so basically winter is your only option).

The stuff still exists in the game world. I have tracked down old forts in adventurer mode by following the spread of masterwork rock crafts back.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I'm pretty sure yes, but not in such vast detail that they'll eat FPS, which is why it's a reasonable strategy to dump all your smelly sweat socks and loincloths and other such useless gunk on merchants to get rid of them.
