Attatch rope to nearby stalagmite and use it to climb down the ledge.
+1, But first make sure the stalagmite won't break from our weight by pulling on it with rope.

Maybe go back and get a camera, and report the bullet casing, because that's just weird.
That is so sensible, no one would do it.

We entered a dark cave w/ no prior knowledge of the layout and no backup.
-1 for this suggestion, too many sense.
Besides if the casing is rusted it's probably been here for a while.

With an air of satisfaction, you remove the rope from it's place in your pack, and wrap the rope in a snug fit around the largest stalagmite you can see. Giving it several strong tugs to ensure that you won't fall off. Satisfied, you tentatively climb down the ten meters to the 'Lower Passageway'. You can only see plain rock, accompanied by standard stalag(m/t)ites. Probably about thirty meters, until the power of your headlamp fades. Further down, you're able to see a small stream running through gaps in the rock.

Let's go down the small passageway.

+1, but see if we can take any extra rope, perhaps?

A 20m waste of rope seems like a bad idea.

Let's remove the excess 20m using the ice pick. ((I presume by ice pick you mean ice axe.))

You immediately duck down into the mildly low passage, and take a moment to use the serrated teeth on your ice pick/axe to cut down the unused 20 meters of rope. You then begin to move down the 'hall', head ducked. As your headlight comes into range, after about 25 meters, the passage opens up into a larger chamber, with several interesting things. The first, logically is a cave formation, looking somewhat like the arms of an octupus. Second, a weirdly out of place crystal, all purple and angular, like a crystal sea urchin. IT looks pretty cool, to be honest. Third, and strangest, is another rusted bullet casing, a meter or two in front of a chipped stalagmite. Other than that, nothing much intere-what the hell?!

Spoiler: Preemptive Note (click to show/hide)

Uh, well that. That was goddamn scary. Just a spooky as hell rock formation... or perhaps carving. Either way, creepy, but ultimately harmless. In the investigative mood, you walk over to the bullet casing. Just as rusted as the first, and still looking like something out of a pistol. Without any fanfare, you pick it up, and place it next to its twin. On to the next odd thing in the room, you stroll over to the crystal. The thing looks undoubtedly sharp, both something that people would never cut, nor what nature would create. An anomaly, to be sure. Lastly, in the interest of preserving battery life, you switch the headlamp into low power mode. For but a second, the world is plunged into darkness, before the bulb reignites into a weaker glow, that only illuminates about four or five meters in front of you. The creepy rock... face is still just as spooky, yet all the more imposing. Elsewhere, the sea urchin-like crystal sparkles from the light. Giving the chamber a once-over, the only destination in through a gap where the cave walls meet the ceiling, just as small as the one that led here in the first place. From the odd angle, you can't see anything beyond the opening.
