They can be climbed and, in rare occasions, jumped through.

If it's inside the cavern I doubt they can climb, right? I mean, the Z level above should be covered.

Or I could always just have the stairs leading to the fortifications inside my fort and use bridges to trap enemies, that is if the traps and dwarves don't kill them before they reach the last bridge.
