How do I get rid of "named" weapons?
« on: November 29, 2016, 12:57:25 am »

I have a bunch of really crappy steel battleaxes and silver warhammers that my dwarves have named that I want to replace.  How do I get them to get rid of their crappy old weapons and start using new ones?  I tried forbidding them, I'm not sure if they dropped them or not, I was thinking maybe I could assign them a mining labor or something.

switching them to miner labors got them to drop the weapons, but i can't dump or melt them.  Is there at least some way of sorting them in a stockpile?  I'm not sure what their core quality is considered, if its the weapon quality or artifact.  I can't seem to get my dwarves to haul it.  I kind of wish i could put it in a display case or something.

It might be that the weapons are considered to be owned by the dorfs that named them. In that case you somehow need to clear that relation. The DFHack script "cleanowned" removes ownership of old clothes, if I understand it correctly, so it might be possible to look at that to figure out how to remove ownership to allow hauling. To put them in display cases you'd need to wait for the next DF version, however.

I don't think forbidding them will help, but I could be wrong. I think you want to put a dump order on the offending weapon and then assign a specific desired weapon to the dwarf on the military uniform menu. There should be a uniform sub-menu where you can then look through your weapon stash and choose exactly what weapon you want the dwarf to grab.

[m]ilitary
[e]quip
[w]eapon
Choose "specific weapon" on the dwarf is question (iirc it's the first option)
Choose whatever you want
Remove the indiv choice weapon assignment

This MAY work, in conjunction with dumping or forbidding the named weapon. When it comes to items military dwarves are attached to, I find they only prefer that item when the assigned equipment allows them to grab it (Indiv choice weapon, metal shield/buckler, etc). This is usually how I melt down weapons dwarves have gotten attached to.

Edit: have not tried this with named weapons so science has to be done.

you can't designate named weapons for dumping, except from a stockpile inventory screen, for some reason.  I don't suppose they would haul it to their rooms now that I got their new weapons equipped?  Thanks for the tip about owned items and dfhack, Patrik.

That is the method I have always used, and I have confirmed that it still works in 43.03.  The soldier immediately went and placed her named mace in a storage bin.  DFHack doesn't report any owner on viewing it.  I always wondered if it caused a bad thought, but looking I did not see one.

Like I said, I took them all off of training and assigned them all mining labors, and that caused them to drop the weapons, after which I equipped them with all new weapons.  Unfortunately, my dwarves don't seem to want to take the named weapons to a stockpile.

Because of the weird 'quasi-artifact' nature of named weapons, they are somewhat difficult to get rid of, I generally just build them into a weapon trap in the room of the dwarf who named it, they will get positive thoughts from seeing the weapon this way (at least as of 40., not one hundred percent certain in 43.)
