Test
« on: December 27, 2016, 12:08:42 am »

This a test for my second upcoming RTD game.

It takes place in the world of Survival of the Meanest, my first game.

Anyways, choose a race -

Elf - +1 speed.
Human - +1 health.
Dwarf - +1 health and attack, -1 speed.

Next, choose a class

Spearman - +1 proficiency with pikes, spears, and halberds
Swordsman - +1 proficiency with longswords, broadswords, and falchions
Marksman - +1 proficiency with bows, crossbows, and thrown weapons

Next, choose a companion type

Sworn blade - A swordsman with a knack for dishing out damage
Squire - A knight-in-training that is proficient with most weapons

Finally, spend your initial money. You start with 350 drachmas.

Fists - 1 attack power (free!)
Bronze pike (2h spear) - 4 attack power, 2 reach (150)
Bronze dagger (1h dagger) - 3 attack power (75)
Bronze longsword (2h sword)- 5 attack power (150)
Leather armor - 2 defensive power (200)
Chainmail hauberk - 3 defensive power (300)
Longbow (2h bow) - 2 attack power, 10 reach (150)
Crossbow (2h bow) - 3 attack power, 12 reach (250)
Arrows x 10 (10)
Crossbow bolts x 5 (10)
Bronze throwing dagger - 3 attack power, 6 reach, one use (15)

Plot
The power struggle in the great trading city of Kanthaa has died down, only to give way to something more sinister. A great horde of twisted cave beasts, known as underlings, has invaded the town, crushing the city guard and terrorizing the people of the city. The city's inquisitor, who would normally deal with such happenings, is dead. The city has fallen into complete chaos. The last relief effort has ended, and Kanthaa itself has been sealed, a gargantuan wall having been built around it. Anyone still inside was left for dead by the outside world. A few pockets of civilization remain in the city, walled off from the roaming marauders and underlings. You have been living in such a place for many months now. However, today, the barricade that held the underlings out was breached. Panic ensued when a horde of raiders poured through the breach, armed to the teeth. You set your caged underlings upon them, but they were too many. They killed the leader of your safehold and enslaved anyone fit to work. You managed to escape with a few others, but you haven't really escaped anything. You're still stuck in this city, surrounded by these monsters...

Actions - Unlike my first game, Survival of the Meanest, this game will have a rigid and unbending turn structure, similar to that of the acclaimed RTD game GruntsTM. State your actions simply, and it shall be done if you roll well. Dialogue happens in real-time.

Every day(ish), I will end one turn and begin another. If you haven't acted, you will be skipped. You can set automatic actions for yourself while you're gone, however.

Combat - choose from four different combat modes:

Offensive (shoot/stab things until said things no longer breathe)
Defensive (play it safe, focus on your well-being)
Balanced (you get no bonuses or penalties to either your attacking or defending)
Run (run run run oh god run it might catch you don't look back)

Skills - skills come in two distinct types, active and passive. Both are acquired through training or reading. Here is a list of possible skills -

Strike - deals normal damage to one enemy.
Precision strike - deals damage based on your speed, not your attack
Shoot - Fire your bow or crossbow at an enemy, dealing normal damage.
Run - sets your combat mode to run in the middle of combat
Stunning blow - deals 50% damage! has a 30% chance to stun an enemy for one combat turn

Priority - in your character sheet, after your skills, you may put a priority indicator after a skill. For instance, let's say you want to use Precision strike more than Stunning blow, and you never want to use Strike. You'd do something like this

Strike - deals normal damage to one enemy. (never use)
Precision strike - blah blah blah (1 priority)
Stunning blow - bleargh

Now let's say that you want to use Run when you reach x health or less. You'd do this:

Run - blah blah (hp < x always, else never)

You can also do this for shoot, but with ammunition

Shoot - Bork Bork (ammo < x never, else always)

Finally, let's say that you want to use shoot with a crossbow when your enemy is x paces away, but use strike with a dagger when they're near. You'd write this

Shoot - description (enemy distance > x paces, always, else never) + (use crossbow)
Strike - description (enemy distance < x paces, always, else never) + (use bronze dagger)

Stats

Here are what your stats do.

Health - You should not be here if you don't know what health does. 1 health point counts as 10 hit points in battle.
Speed - Increases your dodging chance, your critical strike chance, and, if you have a shield equipped, your blocking chance.
Attack - Your raw power.
Proficiency - How proficient you are with a weapon. The higher this skill is, the stronger you are using a corresponding weapon. There are four proficiencies as of now - Sword proficiency, Spear proficiency, Bow proficiency, and Dagger proficiency. These increase with your use of the related weapon.

NEW: Affiliations

Affiliations affect where you start, your base relations with some characters, and your enemies.

You can choose from four affiliations, including...

Survivor - just your average guy in an apocalyptic disaster.
Raider - you take what you need from whoever has it.
Silverblade - you were sent to aid survivors, and fight underlings.
Soldier - you were part of the Kanthaan militia before the disaster.

Here's a starting character sheet. Edit all stat values according to your class and race.

I briefly considered having axe, hammer, and mace proficiencies, but I decided not to implement these for simplicity's sake. Dwarf.

So, is this just a short-term game to test mechanics?

Really depends on how it works out. Most likely yes, but this may possibly become a fullblown game if it works well.

Great! Please add 10 to your current hitpoints and add an affiliation, and you're all set to begin!

I'm short on time and skimmed the OP, so I'm not sure if this game is accepting players. If it is, I'll have my sheet in later.
