Marksdwarves warping through fortifications
« on: November 23, 2016, 04:39:51 pm »

I understand dwarves love to hop over walls, but as soon as a goblin get's close to my fortification, the marksdwarves dive through to their death, even though I have a wall built overtop of them to prevent climbing over. What's going on here?

Did you put the wall ON the fortification, or over the empty space above where dwarves stand?

I've had the same thing once and I just realised why it happened.  I had 2 burrows: one in my  fortress and one in my farm/pasture.  I had both burrows active because I thought there was no way to path to the farm/pasture.  Some goblins made it in to the pasture and my crossbow dwarfs leaped over the fortifications and down 2 stories to get at them (with predictable results).

Even when there is no burrowed path between where your dwarf is and another burrow, they will freely travel between them if they think it is necessary.  Even though these guys were in the military (and hence shouldn't have been burrowed), I guess they felt it was OK to move into the burrow to protect it.  And they took the shortest path...

Not sure if that's similar to what happened to you...

You need to build a floor/wall above a built fortification or there is a path into the fortress, at least for fliers, and I wouldn't be surprised if a climb attacking dorf could get out that way too. It's also possible for creature to quantum tunnel through walls when dodging.

Dorfs attacking sometimes ignore normal pathing and climb to get at targets (while at other times refuse to move a single tile forward to get into missile range, and instead desert the attack order and sneak off to train).

Weird, since goblins can't get in. Will building walls then carving them afterwards negate this issue?

Yes. Carved fortifications retain the floor above "installed" as part of building the wall. I wouldn't bet anything on it remaining if you were to remove a wall that was present at the time of carving on the level above though.

I have had dwarves diagonally descend downstair-fortification setup to attack a troll pitted to room below through retracting bridge in 42.06, at least.

What i do it build a layer of vertical bars out of lead in front of the fortifications, works like a charm.
