pot-problem ;)
« on: November 25, 2016, 01:13:28 pm »

my haulers slowly as fuck/completly refuse maybe - putting the meat i bought into the pots. even setting the potstockpile to "give" got the foodstockpile doesnt help. as you see they use it for the drinks and the prepared meals. is this a priorityproblem in haulingjobs ?! eventually most of it was not hauled before it rotted. was some expensive fuckup for me there.

the potstockpile is a furniture stockpile with only pots enabled and its set up to "take" from the main furniture stockpile some levels below. as i said, giving to foodstockpile didnt work either.

Guesses:
*If you have reserved barrels for barrel-using jobs (e.g. brewing), those barrels are not available for stockpiling.
*Does your meat stockpile allow barrels (the initial type of stockpile determines the initial barrel/bin settings)?
*Did you change the barrel-consolidation settings in the config files?

If none of those apply you might have better luck posting a save so someone can figure out what exactly has gone wrong instead of guessing everything that could go wrong.

You could try a small 1*5 pot/barrel stockpile beside the food pile.
And make sure the food pile has barrels enabled.
Travel time to get a pot/barrel may be your issue.

When I buy out all the food on a caravan then I put down an emergency stockpile for Meat, Fish, and Cheese and tell that stockpile to Give to the main stockpile. Because...

When a lot of stuff is headed for one stockpile, you will see all the items dropped on the stockpile by a swarm of dwarfs while one dwarf works with a barrel to condense things. But there will never be a lot of dwarfs with barrels because of the settings mentioned below.
*Did you change the barrel-consolidation settings in the config files?

If the pots are made of a heavy substance, the travel time will increase as well.

All containers are a pain to use.  But I tend to use pots for meat as well, because they are very convenient.

You need a food stockpile that accepts pots.  It is almost always best to make this stock pile *only* accept meat (or meat and fish, if you also want to put fish in pots).  Set the number of barrels to the max, but keep in mind that no matter what settings you set, it will always reserve 1 space for an empty barrel (I think this is a bug).

Now the secret to understanding barrels (and other containers) is that dwarfs will carry to the barrel to the item, fill the barrel *with a single item* and then return the barrel.  So if you have your trade depot full of meat and it is 40 tiles away from the meat stockpile, your dwarfs are hauling barrels back and forth *for each bloody piece of meat*.  Especially since a rock pot can contain something like 60 pieces of meat, your poor dwarf is going to haul that damn thing back and forth to the trade depot 60 times!  i.e., 4800 tiles hauling a heavy barrel -- way more than enough time for most of the meat to go off.

So the trick is to make an intermediate stockpile that for meat (and potentially fish, or anything else you want in a barrel).  Put this stock pile near your permanent stockpile, but *don't* allow barrels.  That way multiple dwarfs can all grab a single piece of meat or fish, and deposit it in the intermediate stockpile.  In the meantime another dwarf will grab a barrel, haul it to the intermediate stockpile, add a piece of meat and then haul it back again.

The intermediate stockpile needn't be large.  Just big enough to deal with the difference in speed of delivery. It's also handy because it is a visual indicator when your barrels are full, because you'll have some spilling over into the intermediate stockpile.  If *that* one is full, then you might consider dumping some meat so that it spoils outdoors.

Hope that helps!

Ok thx that actually helps. So near my main pile for food and booze i set up an intermediate stock not accepting barrels that gives to the main stock? Sure this works? I always thought if stuff from Depot D goes to intermediate stockpile A wich gives to main stockpile B the dwarfs would just ignore A as long as D doesnt fill up B completly. E.g. i believe that bins from the carpenter workshop are going directly to the minipiles near the masons and smelters as long as they are not completly filled up with bins because of the give command of the main furniture pile. But i will try.

I always thought if stuff from Depot D goes to intermediate stockpile A wich gives to main stockpile B the dwarfs would just ignore A as long as D doesnt fill up B completly.
If both stockpiles are set to the default "Will take from anywhere" then stuff may be dropped on both. The nearest stockpile will be filled up first (where "nearest stockpile" is "if dwarfs could walk through floor and walls", not the "shortest walk").

The key thing is that stockpile A provides more room for storage while the stuff is being slowly packed into the pots/barrels and as space opens on B, stuff from A will be moved to B.

This paragraph about rotting foods is good for understanding how to avoid.

You need a food stockpile that accepts pots.  It is almost always best to make this stock pile *only* accept meat (or meat and fish, if you also want to put fish in pots).
I always end up with large "meat/prepared_fish/cheese/fat/tallow stockpiles just for sudden overstock from trading or hunting or stranded orcas. Limiting the stockpile to these food types and having it Give to another stockpile means that the stockpile is always free.
