No Kobolds on Embark? (Resolved)
« on: November 22, 2016, 10:48:07 pm »

I usually do medium history, any size world, medium beasts, medium savagery and very high everything else, but it seems like Kobolds are always completely absent from the embark screen. Am I doing something wrong, or do they die out at ridiculous rates? (I searched every term and phrase I could think of, but I couldn't find anything related to this issue directly)

Edit: Kobolds do not show on the embark screen and that does not mean that they haven't survived world creation. Thanks for the info!

They're hidden until encountered in-game, I think.

AS Bumber said, they never show up pre embark. You can find out if there are any nearby using Legends Mode (I export the data for use with Legends Viewer). I'm not sure what their range is, though, as it seems it might be the same as a Black Tower, i.e. 10 rather than the 30 of "real" civilizations.

I finally said 'screw it' and embarked and it seems they happen to be in range, haha. Thank you very much for letting me know that Kobolds don't show on the embark screen, though! I really appreciate it.

If you zip into legends mode and look at the historical map, you can see what territory each kobold civ claims.  My guess is that they will show up if you are in one of those area.

If you use the advanced world generation options, which I highly recommend since it is an amazing tool for sculpting your DF experience, then you can set caves to be visible on embark. Kobolds tend to live in caves so a good way to meet lots of kobolds and other interesting locals is to make sure you have a cave on your embark.

@mikekchar: I did have a look at the territory claim of my current kobold neighbors, and it doesn't cover my embark (the very evil goblin plain in between might account for that). One of the kobold civs claim about 11 tiles worth of the dwarven mountain range from the north end, while the other one claims about 12 tiles northwards (and the ranges overlap in the middle). My embark is something like 6 tiles away from the southernmost kobolds. At a guess, their range is somewhat similar to their maximum claim range.
I guess it might be worthwhile to keep track of the largest range kobolds have come from.
