@Sil3nt: Possibly digging trenches?

I also second the puppysplosion problem. Trained dogs want to follow around their trainer, too, so beware of that.

But still...recently ran a generation seaside fort (2x3) with starting FPS around 500, ended on 147 dwarves, 9 other creatures and 50 FPS. Not much digging after fortress was done, but my FPS still dropped down from 150 to 50 after it was done as population increased. *checks random backup made 26 years before* A 39 dwarf/4 pet fortress had 116 FPS, which is *3,76 dwarves (and associated equipment, I guess?) for 2,32 times less FPS, suggesting that dwarves - living creatures, really - doing things make up for at most 61,7% of FPS.

(Also, lot better than what you're getting...Which could possibly be due machines, granted.)

Could have won some back with retirement due massive digging efforts perhaps, but didn't test due FBs.

Regarding tree growth, embark on areas with 4 rainfall or less to avoid massive tree regrowth (more and most arid deserts, badlands, rocky wastelands), or alternatively oceans/mountains also don't have any.
