DF from a USB key?
« on: June 23, 2007, 09:43:00 pm »

Given that DF appears to run solely out of its own directory, is it possible to run the game off of a suitably large USB key?

I switch computers a lot, and rather than maintaining a few instances of DF (and thus a few fortresses), I'd rather just carry the key around with me.

I keep it on my iPod, and copy the directory over to the computer I'm playing on. Multiple worlds/fortresses/exported graphics can get pretty big though, so I usually just try to keep it small.

I haven't tried running it off the iPod though, mainly because I don't want that many read-writes on the drive. But it appears to be self-contained enough to be called "portable."

Yes the whole game runs fine off a USB stick. Since I got this game I have played it entirely off the stick across different computers. World generation, dwarf mode and adventure mode all work fine.

Tis kind of cute actually as I can see when the game is writing stuff to disk  :).

I've also been playing almost exclusively from a usb drive. Its just nice to know that I have a whole world with dwarves and fortresses hanging next to my keys ready to be played. Id suggest using a faster drive though, I tried on one of my slower drives and it takes about a minute to start after you run the exe.

I sugesst that you keep it in a waterproof case and make backups in your home computer (maybe i'ma get my self a 1 gig)so if your disk gets ruined you can still play your current fortress.
