I'm not usually one for writing fan-fiction as it's usually either a self insert fantasy or shipping two characters together.
But I was playing Overwatch and I had a thought while playing Tracer. Why would you just jump to field agent if you were a test pilot? That's quite a jump in real-life so I brainstormed a little fan-fiction. Maybe she just liked going fast but was idealistic and would have helped more if she believed she could be more then a pilot. Then someone showed her how.
This is a rough script/outline about a potential character for Overwatch. You might even say this is just some fanfiction. It kinda is, I suppose.
The idea is corely a new character to help counter the speedy types like Genji and Tracer. I know Winston is a good counter tank but this is more a defense character with abilities outside of countering those fast based types.
The premise is that the Slipstream that Tracer was selected for was designed by a single guy. A young inventor who developed the Chrono-accelerator on the Slipstream and was generally the catalyst for Tracer becoming more then a test pilot. This tale, sadly, doesn't have a good ending.
His name was Alexander Marcus, a young genius selected for his ChronoTecTM developments straight out of college. He is incredably idealistic, even more so then Tracer and Winston. He envisoned the Slipstream as being the prototype of a new air-borne technology that would allow emergency aid to be deployed around the globe almost instantiously. He was a little annoyed that the Overwatch counsel could only mostly think of the military applications of the technology but he found an interested ear in Commander Morrison and Head of Medical Research Dr.Ziegler for the support potential in his design. Commander Morrison understood the importance of immedate medical support and injured evac being a decorated, veteran soldier and commander. Dr.Ziegler was also overjoyed in the young man's idealism and pushed the idea of a eventual support carrier using the tech to be deployed upon completing a test fighter prototype. Some of his jet test designs would inspire Dr.Ziegler's angel wings jetpack and Winston's jump pack.
The production went smoothly and in the last weeks of development a wide net was cast to find a suitable test pilot from air forces and experiental test pilots from around the globe. The best of the best were selected and narrowed down into 20 pilots.
This is where our first scene begins:
SCENE ONE
Interior of a large, concrete and steel hangar. Work crews can be seen moving parts in the background and sparks could be seen flying up from something they're working on.
Dominating the center of the hangar is the Slipstream, a custom Jet fighter with a large orb between the engines, the Teleportation Matrix.
Lined up before the camera and the Slipstream are 20 people. Most are in military flight gear of various countries and looking quite severe.
We hear bickering getting louder as a couple walks in from a side office: One is a young man in glasses in a work uniform juxtaposing with his white lab coat. The other one is Commander Morrison in his shiny armor and uniform.
MARCUS: Yes, yes, I know. Tell the counsel we're close to the deadline but the Slipstream will be ready within the time limit.
MORRISON: Good. They're antsy about this project and it's budget, you know that. They want a nice headline grabbing setpiece and they want it soon. Overwatch needs to look strong now.
MARCUS: And they'll get it. We just need to have everything else down before we deliver them my LIFES WORK!! *makes a grandiose pose like he just made the Mona Lisa*
(Commader Morrison gives him a stern look that somehow portrays "WTF are you doing?")
(Both stop at the end of the assembled line of pilots)
(Marcus catches sight of Morrisons expression and lets his arms drop lamely)
MARCUS: *Sigh* I know. I just dread what they'll do with teleporting bombers and missles. That's not what this was made for. *Glances at the Slipstream*
MORRISON: (His stern look softens a bit) I get it. But after they get what they want first, imagine how many more your tech can save. *Gestures hand to the formation of pilots* For the test, we've assembled some of the best pilots from across the globe to help us test the Slipstream.
(The pair walk along the line looking at the faces of the very stern pilot men and women. All looking at attention. The line doesn't move and the camera is angled up so we see these men's and women's chisled chins and smart bearing. Until we see a gap inbetween 2 of the heads.)
(Here the camera scrolls down. We see a very excited and young Tracer bouncing on her heels. Her attention is divided and bouncing like her heels between Marcus, Commander Morrison and the Slipstream)
*Marcus grins at the display while Commander Morrisons face remains impassive. Tracer's attention bounces between both men, excitedly, and settles on Marcus.*
MARCUS: Hello miss?....*Extends hand slowly for a handshake*
TRACER: *GLOMPS HAND WITH BOTH OF HERS EXCITEDLY* Hi-ya, I'm Lena! Lena Oxton! You developed THIS?! *She flicks her head back to point at the plane with a suprised look. One of her hair spikes brushes against a tall man to her right. He looks mildly annoyed.*
MARCUS: Yeah, I did. *Retrieves hand from her death grip* Marcus, Project Lead for the Slipstream. And I introduce Command-
*Commander Morrison goes to shake hand at the introduction and his hand is also immedately glomped. His impassive face twitches for a second with mild amusement.*
TRACER: Yeah, I know, It's Commander Morrison, founder of Overwatch! Honor to meet you both! .....so, when' do we get to fly THAT?
*Commander Morrison retrieves his hand gently, as if something was broken*
MORRISON: *Holds up head to address the entire group* Test flights to choose who will fly the Slipstream will be held tomorrow. You are to be in this hanger tomorrow, ready to fly at 0700. Sleeping assignments, meal times and uniforms will be dealt with in the main building tonight at 1800. Dismissed.
*The crowd snaps to attention and then dissperses towards the entrance that Commander Morrison and Marcus came in from. Commander Morrison leaves after them. Tracer and Marcus remain in the hanger looking at the Slipstream*
TRACER: So......howfastdoesshefly?WhatlevelofGcanshebearbeforeshearforce-
*Marcus holds up a hand and grins slightly to forestall the torrent of technical questions about how the Slipstream flies*
MARCUS: You'll get a chance to fly tomorrow. Show us your stuff, have fun. We're looking for flying style, not just skill. The Slipstream is....tempermental. It's not like any plane you've flown before. That's all I can say.
*Tracer calms down a bit and looks a little annoyed at not being able to talk shop*
MARCUS: I can say that she's.....not about speed or precision. You need to be able to see into the future to fly her.
*Tracer looks confused. She goes to open her mouth to ask something but Marcus shakes his head and smiles and walks off. Tracer looks at the Slipstream with mild confusion.*
