is there a way to sim into the future?
« on: November 17, 2016, 04:21:22 am »

Is there a way to sim your world into the future after character creation? I made an adventurer and I retired him, but now I'm interested in seeing what happens to him during retirement and if he does anything noteworthy afterwards. He killed a few bronze collosusi during his adventuring days so he isnt too shabby. I tried playing Fortress Mode to sim it in the future but I always get burnt out on a fort after about a year or two ingame and that isnt really enough time. Any suggestions?

Create an invincible small fortress (an adventurer vampire or goblin joining the fortress and then gets bricked in, with the fortress being a 1*1 embark). I believe there's a way to remove the FPS cap of 100, so remove the cap, set the view to display an unexplored area of rock, disable all pausing announcements (in announcement.txt), and set it to run in the background. You should probably make the game window as small as possible and then minimize it as well.

They only need food/booze/clothes so plan on having a slight overproduction of those, and rock pots. Add bedrooms a SAFE water supply/ hospital  and seal them in.
And don't forget to edit announcement.txt to remove all pauses. (Very useful)
I think you just make the caps 1000, not sure...
A temple and library might be a good idea too.

What did I forget?

As far as I understand, by using non eating/drinking creatures who do die of old age you can just brick them up without caring that they'll eventually go bonkers. As long as at least one of them is "alive", regardless of mental state, the fortress will be considered to stand.
Now, you can also make a sealed regular fortress (as Goadmaan suggests) which should stand until their members die of old age or an unfortunate tantrum spiral.

Patrik I think you meant "DON'T die of old age "
But he can't let it run too long, or the adventurer will die of old age.  :P

Correct. It should have said "don't". Whether the adventurer will die of old age depends on race and and any potential existence prolonging measures.
