Best way to get a print-quality image out of DF?
« on: November 01, 2016, 03:39:05 pm »

I'll be at a conference in NYC next week where Tarn will be speaking. I'm hoping he will sign a picture of one of my DF fortresses.

If possible, I'd like to blow the image up to something close to poster-sized. But I think just taking a screenshot will limit the DPI I can achieve as well as well as limiting the size/shape of the image.

Does anyone know of any other tricks to get a higher quality image - of a fort of even of the world gen screen - out of DF?

You need to run the resulting image through scaling filters designed for pixel art, then make a vector image from the scaled up raster.

There are a number of such filters, such as HQ4X.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hqx

Paint.net has a filter plugin that does these.

You can use the "trace bitmap" or "trace pixel art" routines in inkscape to make a suitable vector image that can be printed in large formats.

The best upscaled is xBR, and its author commented in that thread. He apparently made a standalone program to upscale PNG files that might be useful to you.

HQX4 is quite good though, and should give good results.

What tileset are you using?

CLA - an ASCII-like Graphic Pack with simplified letter-like creature graphics. The simple and clean looks of ASCII with distinct creature graphics - best of both worlds!

You could try UristMaps http://demo.uristmaps.org/

Zoom into a level of detail you want and start making screenshots, then put them all together in GIMP or Paint.Net, then print.
