Memory usage has varied enormously here. On a new pocket fort 5*5 with few z levels it's using a bit over 210 MB, while on an old fortress 9*9 with 40+ z levels, all features and over 100,000 items it was hitting somewhere between 800-900.

I suspect the number of loose items makes a BIG difference in both the memory usage as well as the achievable fps. This is at least partly confirmed by the improvement I had in fps when I traded/dumped into a chasm, the majority of those items in my last big fort.

To summarize what everyone else has said, processor + ram = happy df.

A video card makes very little difference. I just upgraded from a 3+ year old card to a new 8800, and no change has been made to my df fps.

I think it leans towards processor, as most people have more than enough ram, the processor take the brunt of the thinking.

An overclocked dualcore would be a good bet.

Thanks for the advice guys. Im getting a one of the newer Wolfdale E8400 chips. Clock is 3.0 ghz. Should be more than enough, i might overclock later when I know what to do.

Yes, definitely get the E8400 or higher since they are with the new 45nm and apparently cause of this can be overclocked INSANELY. Have read several posts already that people have easily pushed it to 4-5 ghz with a decent cooler. Close to 4 or so without even altering the voltage settings whatsoever.

These chips are so insanely good and cheap as well it's amazing.
