Osiris - New Dawn
« on: October 09, 2016, 08:54:47 am »

The early access for this game came out just the other day on steam (the 28th of Sep I think).

Draegast did some lets plays recently too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65tCigi70Po

It's your crafting survival game, in space. The graphics look very nice and the monsters refreshingly horrible. It looks like it might develop into something nice. Maybe subnautica level nice? But its early days and its a lot of money to put down just yet. Been burned enough already with early access.

Anybody else here try it yet though? Impressions?

Not played it, but it's just one of those things that's way too early to tell the direction it'll go in. I kinda feel that open world crafting games have kinda had their day - it's all just been done to death, and I can't really see what new mechanics this will bring to the table.

Could potentially have a niche if the action is good enough/monsters are strong enough.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

The action will always be shit in these games, because that is the last thing to be worked on. These games are from the springwell of Minecraft where its action is also total garbage.

I think that there's still plenty of potential good open world survival/crafting games out there. The problem Is all the non-innovating ones that just go "you can craft better pickaxes digging tools to mine resources faster and make a cool furnace! Watch out for the zombies monsters, though!"

So Osiris actually looks really interesting - mainly for its apparent base-building aspect, something that I really love. Not going to buy it just yet, probably. But it's definitely on my wishlist.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Another thing I noticed was that the lead designer has had 15 years working in AAA, on a lot of big projects. But yeah, I am wondering what they can bring that will be new.

Base building and stuff can be fun, but for me it's only fun if there's a point to it. If I need to build a bigger base to defend against hordes of enemies then I'll be super engaged - if its just for the fun of it then I'll have a fun hour or two and not go back.

As MrWiggles says, the action always seems to be an after thought or at least extremely basic - if they can up that a little bit (or at least make it more survival-y) then I'll be an 'innovation' of sorts.
