dfhack setfps 1, perhaps?

Otherwise, single-step (.) through it.

An alternative is using "Alt"+"-" to lower the fps cap to about 10 (use "Alt"+"+" to increase it later).

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

I don't know if it's possible, but Announcement.txt contains the parameters for a large number of messages, and I think a number of those are combat related. Setting combat messages to pause DF and then lower the FPS might do it, but may result in too much pausing.

Definitely, if you have any sparrers at all. For similar reasons, pausing whenever pet dies depends on how much of a meat industry you run.

I just pause and unpause in short intervals.

You could make a macro that steps (.) a fixed number of ticks.
